6 Weight Loss Methods to Avoid

Starvation or fasting diets

Severely cutting calories without making sure you are getting the proper nutrition will cause some weight loss but will also cause you to lose muscle and slows your metabolism. Ironically, it can also cause a higher percentage of body fat, which will increase your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Diet pills

Many over the counter diet supplements will make amazing promises but most don’t deliver and the ones that do usually have unsafe ingredients. There are also prescription weight loss pills you can get and, though they may work in the short term, they have very scary and dangerous side effects. Regardless if they are prescription or over the counter the weight lost is usually regained quickly once you stop taking them.

Cleansing and detox plans

Cleanses cause weight loss from primarily from water and stool weight, they carry risks of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and more.

Extreme exercising

Though it may sound good and some TV shows make millions off the idea, it is extremely dangerous and unhealthy. It can cause unusual wear and tear on joint, ligaments and muscles and can psychologically turn exercise into punishment for food. If you are not eating properly to give your body the fuel for the exercise you can cause lifelong problems for many internal organs.

Drugs (legal and illegal)

Many years ago I remember hearing about the “housewives’ drug of choice”. It was perfect because you could get everything done that you needed to do plus you could lose weight. It sounded so wonderful to many women; unfortunately it was too good to be true. Many men and women did lose weight using it, but they also lost families, homes and many lost their lives. It is so sad when you think that so many started it just to lose a few pounds.

Purging

This includes making yourself vomit, chewing and spitting food and abusing laxatives. This is not only unhealthy but can quickly and easily cause other problems, including tooth decay and erosion in the esophagus and mouth. It will also increase the risk for certain cancers.

With this one I have personal experience. When I was 16 I started purging and continued off and on for years. It got so out of control I would automatically do it no matter what I ate or how little it was. I was so skinny, but to this day if I see a picture from that time period I remember how fat I still thought I was. I was bony, I mean icky skinny, but I was still obsessed with the fact that I was “fat”. I saw a doctor about it, friends did an “intervention”, people talked to me all the time about it but I couldn’t seem to see what they were talking about.

One day I ended up in the hospital for what I thought was a different emergency only to learn that I was in the middle of a miscarriage. I was farther along than I ever imagined and it was caused from malnutrition and the negative effects all the purging had on my body. I never even noticed I was pregnant because I was so obsessed. It took a long time to heal from all that mentally, physically and psychologically. In fact I still battle it regularly, there are many times I have to make a conscious decision not to purge. It is one of those things I will battle forever, I believe, and one of those things I wish I had never started. I never understood weight loss and that there was a healthy way to do it.
