Parting out Yamaha Phazers 84 & 85

Hello,

I am parting out two Yamaha Phazers, vin #s 8x9 - 023932 PZ480SE (Special Edition -the 1984) and 80K-002898 PZ480E (Electric Start - the 1985). Here's the scoop on both sleds -

I picked up both sleds a few days ago at an auction. Both sleds have some significant problems - I have pulled both engines and removed the heads & jugs from both. The blocks on each sled have water damage - the 1984 especially, having a seized and very rusted crank. The 1985 fired up and ran before I removed the engine - the sled wouldn't idle because there is a long crack low in the crank case (probably caused by water that froze over winter), affecting the vacuum at idle. However, the sled would rev no problem, engaging the track. I have removed and cleaned the carbs on both sleds, both look good with no water damage.

These sleds are complete, but the cranks on both sleds are bad. Good heads on each, jugs might need bored & new pistons(especially on the 1984, which had much more water damage) This is why I'm not trying to restore either one - aside from this each sled looks great! If you would be interested in any parts from either sled, let me know, and make an offer. Thanks!

2 up seat for AC ZL

Hello guys. Well I was looking for another 2 up sled, but in thinking about it I don`t really want 3 sitting around, and I don`t want to get rid of the ZL, because it runs so good and is now in really good shape. So I`m looking into finding a factory 2up seat, which seems hard to find. I know I`ll have to upgrade the springs for the added weight. I`ve come across some universal 2 up seats. anyone use them and/or installed them on the older chassis'? I figured it would also make it easier to remove it when I only want and need the look of a single rider.

Thanks!

Haydays newbie

Hey guys, me and some of my buddies are thinking about going to Haydays this year. I have heard that the wait times and the traffic going there is pretty bad. What should I expect as far as that goes? Any tips or suggestions? My friend is going there to buy a new sled. None of us have been there before, so I am not sure what to expect. The main reason why I am going is because I hear that it is really cool and another buddy bought a 1997 vmax 500 there last year with like 3000 miles on it for $500 bucks. I think that is a really good deal, and I am curious if there is usually similar deals around there.

Buying advice for 2 Up sleds

I'm looking for advice and suggestions. I want to buy a couple 2 up sleds so my wife and I can take the kids along trail riding this winter. We're pretty new to the sport, and only have experience with our two early 90's Polaris Indys. We took them out on the trail last winter and the sleds were definitely not ideal.

So my priorities would be to have something reliable and also be comfortable/safe feeling for the kids. They are a little terrified of how loud the Indy's are, but still loved it when we were out on the trails.

What I'm seeing for options are some almost new (2015/2016 & 1-2k miles) entry level sleds - Polaris LXT's & Arctic Cat 2000 LT's - for around $5k, or much older but nicer sleds ( 2003-2008, 4 stroke, rear hand warmers, etc).

Any idea what would be the better option? I'm assuming the newer sleds would be more reliable, but maybe not as comfortable for the passenger on long rides. Maybe even the older sleds are reliable enough now that it's not an issue? I guess anything will be an improvement over my old sleds. :)

Finally, I guess I'm starting to think about snow a little early. Is there any advantage to buying now, or is it better to wait until the shops are putting away their bikes & starting to focus on sleds?

Buying advice for 2 Up sleds

Hi from MN

Hi - bought my first sleds two years ago as a trial to see if 1) I'd like it and 2) the wife and kids like it. Turns out we all do. :)

Snowmobile dolly?

Howdy,
Looking for a dolly that can move snowmobile around on gravel.

Looked at the J&S Dolly and Easymove, but all the movies I have seen show them on concrete. Curious how you move a sled on gravel?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
Bob

Old Cat

An old friend that I used to ride with but have lost contact with now use to ride around on a Cat Jag.

The only thing I can remember about it is that it was a free-air.

We were riding in the 1978-1982 timeframe, his Jag could have been a few years older.

Trying to figure out what it was. We used to race that against a Skidoo Citation and they were fairly equal. I think the Cat was a bit faster, but not by much.

I was always riding brand new machines... brother worked at a Skidoo/Cat dealership and would bring home demos. hehe.

At one point, I made a list of all the machines I've ridden and I was up to around 45 different machines that I at least rode for a weekend.

Belly pan repair

Looks like a prior owner hit something at sime point with the Jag. As you can see, it was repaired, but has come loose in spots.

I'd like to button up the area where the pan meets the tunnel. The steering linkeage is there and I don't want that to freeze up.

No real skid plate options for this machine. What's the best material to use?

2011 ski doo renegade back country 600 ? need help

so im looking for a new sled, i currently have a 08 polairs iq 700, absolutely love the machine, i just want to do more powder riding and breaking trails. i seen a 2001 back country 600 for sale with just over 6000 miles, the guy said the previous owner had said it was rebuilt at 5000 miles but hes not sure, it has 130 psi compression in one and 134 in the other cylender. my question is this, how powerful is the 600 ? is it gonna feel alot slower then my 700 ? will the 137 be good enough for deep 2-3 foot deep powder ? and whats the life expectancy of the 600 e-tecs ? not sure for the year but i always hear bad stuff about them blowing around 5-6000 miles, any help is appreciated just wondering if i should get it or wait until i can find a decent polaris 144 for sale

Arctic Cat Wildcat...help!

Hello! I just joined the group last night after picking up an Arctic Cat Wildcat 700. I need some help though. I am very new to the sport and can't wait to get some snow here in NE Ohio. My first sled was a 1978 Panther 440 so I am sure this will be a nice upgrade. ;) The guy who sold me the Wildcat said it was a 96 but after getting it home I am second guessing that. It is a 700, twin carb (no efi) liquid cooled. It has a water temp gauge that looks after market but not sure. Can anyone help me identify this thing and give me some info on it? I usually do some homework before buying but this was a right place, right time deal. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

then if i let it sit for a while and then start it up it will be back to 2 cylinders again then another half hour of riding and its back down to 1. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this? Bad Coil? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

600 VMax, need help!

I bought a VMax 600 on Craigslist. The seller said the fill cap on the tank was broken but that it ran.
I replaced the tank, tried to pull start it, no fire.
Removed the plugs, pulled with key on, kill switch up, throttle idle bypassed, no spark.
Bought a new battery so I could crank it. Spark on both plugs the instant I started to crank, no spark while cranking, one spark both plugs when I stopped cranking.
Bought a known good CDI and installed it. Same phenomenon, no spark while cranking.

One man said the ignition power coil in the stator must be shot.

Any ideas? I would hate to pull this water cooled engine for nothing.

Also, where can I get a Yamaha shop/service manual for a '94 VMax 600? I have been burned a few times buying manuals online, I even give the serial number and get the wrong book.

Thanks for any help, I am stuck with a dead sled.

When asking what sled to get

age old question of which machine to get.

Of course, there are many different questions that simple question will bring up.

Before asking, consider this:

- What type of riding do you do.
Examples are:
Deep powder in the mountains
Deep powder once in a while, but mostly trails
Mostly groomed or hard packed trails. (subset: Performance or casual riding).
Frozen Lakes and Rivers, pulling a trailer full of gear
Always breaking trail to a destination (cabin, etc)
Work, nothing but work, hauling logs, supplies, etc.

- Is this a 2nd sled for someone else? e.g. GF or wife/spouse
Consider getting the same sled as you have. It is important that both sleds are capable of going to the same places.

- New or used.
Really you need to decide that based on your choices. The thing to do is decide what the ideal sled is for your riding and then see what you are willing to compromise if you buy used.
Budget plays a big part in this as well.

- Type of Motor - 2 stroke vs 4 stroke battle has been going on for a long time. The newer 2 strokes have done really well in competing against some of the advantages the 4 strokes have had. I’m not getting into the great debate. This is going to be a personal choice. The only thing to watch out for is when buying used is that there were issues with certain motors.
Don't always buy into the bigger is better. Bigger is certainly better if you're trying to ride with your buddies in the mountains, but on the trail you might only be able to go 30-60 MPH anyway. Fuel economy may be a better choice for some people.

- Often the one thing a new-to-sledding person will overlook is the suspensions. There are points in the timeline where there were major upgrades in suspensions across all the snowmobile makers. Rider forward design is more about the comfort. The closer you are to the pivot point of the machine, the smoother your ride will be. In 2003 Skidoo introduced the Rev platform, which was rider forward design.

- 2 UP. Riding with a passenger is something that some people like, some people don't. I personally never liked riding behind someone. Sure, my brother and I used to goof around, throw each other off the sled, etc. But reality is, everyone wants to be in control. There are specific 2 UP sleds and then there are Utility sleds that have large seats. They don't list them as 2-up, but the seat is often huge (Skandic WT is a good example). Skidoo also offers a 2-UP option for any sled that has a 137" or longer track.
However, sleds that are specifically set up for 2-up, often have a suspension that can handle it as well.

When asking what sled to get

Medium sleds...thing of the past?

With BRP stopping production of the 550F, I'm sure other manufacturers will follow. I'm curious of what motors are currently being offered by each manufacturer.

BRP has these:

Two Strokes
550F (current stock)
600 Carb? Not sure if they are still offering these one.

600 ETEC (120 HP)
800 ETEC (160 HP)
850 ETEC (165 HP)

Four Strokes
600 ACE (60 HP)
900 ACE (90 HP)
1200 ACE (130 HP)

Note: The ETEC motors are the only two stroke motors that pass the strictest emission requirements in many areas, including Yellowstone.

I have a 600 ETEC and it is all the sled I need, great oil and gas mileage.

New guy looking for sled info

Hi, just found this forum. Buddy of mine wants us to get sleds and ride this winter. We are in central MN and a trail goes right by our neighborhood. I need a bunch of advice. I haven't been on a snowmobile in 30 years. I've been riding bikes and ATVs for quite some time, but no sleds. Looking to spend around $4,000, but have no idea what to buy. Please educate me. Don't want to kill myself, but want to be able to keep up.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Late summer project, my 99 Jag 340

Got bored sitting around the house and pulled the Jag into the garage.

Checked compression while it was still hot: 70 and 90.

Here's the thing, it started and ran and I drove it into the garage.

Last winter it would start and run, but obvious less power as it warmed up and then once warmed up it was very hard to start.

I checked the compression tester and it was reading about 5 PSI low.. So actuals would be 75 and 95. Still way low.

Pulled the cylinders off and measured the best I could with the tool I have and it seems like it is close enough, but I can only measure the ends. Not the middle. Pistons would move about .5mm (yep, .5) when not at the bottom or top, so I'm guessing just wear and tear.

Pistons were new 2 years ago to make it last this long, but I'm sure I need cylinders. Yes, this is the same Jag I posted about last winter.
