Track Studs

I'm going to add studs to the Puma track this off season. I noticed quite a difference with the Jag (studded) and how it rode over the hard packed snow. Even with just 20 some-odd studs. I pulled the studs out of the outer track; I need to install the removed studs into the center of the track this off season; so I'll have 48 right down the center.

I've attached a pic of what Woody's said the sled needs. They say 54 for my 136" track? I was thinking 48?

Any alternatives to the "name brand" studs? I'm looking at $100 for just 48 studs..not including backers and nuts. E-bay? Amazon? Forum members?

Venture 500 xl -03 or -04 on bad lake conditions with snow and slush?

Hello!!

I'm considering buying a venture 500 xl as a fishing snowmobile primarily. I'm looking at a used 2003 and a 2004 right now.

What I've read about the machines up til now is that they're supposed to be very reliable and low maintenance. That sounds great.

On the cons side I've seen people be of the opinion that they're bad outside the trails and that they're heavy...

My journeys with the machine will be pretty much exactly like this: trails to the lake for 20 minutes -1,5 hour and then wherever on the lake trying to catch fish during the day, and then back home again.
So will this "bad outside the trails" thing be a big problem for me on the lakes with bad conditions with slush and snow?

Any other thoughts on the machines?
What are the differences between the -03 and -04?

Thanks!!

Info on cylinders

I have a pair of cylinders from my old Polaris RMK 700 engine that are scared up from me being a dumba** and not realizing until it was too late, of course, that I had a bad coolant leak and let my sled overheat. Luckily I had a backup engine I was able to put in.. I want to rebuild the other engine so I have a backup just in case I have another problem (or create my own problem). My question is, would it be better to by already re-plated cylinders or is there a good place that I can send mine to to have them redone for fairly cheap? Thanks for your input

Hello fellow sledders I have a 2011 polaris IQ shift and I am trying to replace the bearings on the idler wheels, I have the skid out but would like to know how to remove the mounting (asm) arm from the rear torque arm so i can get to the upper idlers, do i need a special puller for the splined AL mounting arm? I have taken the bolt out and tried to pry open the split a little but don't want to destroy anything, any help would be appreciated, thank u!

Wondering about skies. I heard that plastic skies tend not to fit and hit trail arms. IM looking for a deep snow ski and need to know if plastic or metal with wide skin on them is better?

Indy 650 crank bearings

Hello everyone. I've got a 1995 Polaris RXL 650 that someone converted to carbs. The only problem is that the two PTO crank bearings are shot. I don't want to put a ton of money into this thing as I paid next to nothing for it. I just want to put 2 new crank bearings and seals in and run it. I've been looking around for the bearings but I cannot find any aftermarket bearings. I really didn't want to pay $80 for one bearing from the dealer. The crank has the skinny bearing and wide bearing on the PTO end. I need both. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think my cylinders are worn out.

I finally got to ride my sled for about 600 yards uphill(about full throttle) and boy was it a blast. But not thinking right I killed the engine once I got to flat ground let it sit for about 20 min, while I went and had a talk with my grandma.

It would not start again even spraying a little bit of gas into the carbs, so I was forced to walk back home grab the quad and lock the ski's with rope and tow it back down to the shop. This was fun as well :)

I went up a few days later to try my luck with starting and it was a no go. So it got me thinking that once the engine gets hot it looses all compression, I have tested compression when cold and it is near the low end of the spectrum. Or maybe that hard run destroyed them once and for all.

The guy that I received(free)the sled from, said the same thing it will run good and strong for about 10-15min then die and not start again.

Unless someone has any other ideas I'm open to suggestions...

This is just an update to my previous posts, finally got about 4 inches of snow to test.

To all who are new my sled is a 1983 Polaris Indy Trail 440.

Skidoo Renegade Backcountry X vs Arctic Cat XF 8000 high country

Hey Everyone,

I know this is a loaded questions that people tend to hate. But I just want to get some opinions on these two sleds.

There's been two bad winters out here and dealers have had problems moving sleds so there's a bunch of extra stock most places that they are trying to blow out for up to $4000 off and these are the two machines I'm interested in. I live in a flat land area but I'm not big on trail riding and like to get out into the powder whenever I can to burn around and carv in. The info is below.

2016 Ski-doo renegade back country X

2015 Arctic Cat XF 8000 high country limited (about $2000 cheaper than the ski-doo)

Any experience and comments on the machines would be awesome. Thank you!

Polaris Indy 600 Starts on fire

In February my boyfriend purchased a 2014 Polaris Indy 600 ES from an authorized Polaris Dealer in Brandon, Manitoba Canada for me. The sled was pre owned and only had 1200 miles on it with an extended two year warranty. The dealer completed some work to the sled prior to us purchasing it (changed the track and removed/installed front and rear bumpers). After traveling two hours to purchase the sled and then two hours home it was not until the next day by boyfriend took it out. The sled was not driven for more then 10 minutes and it caught on fire and burnt to the ground. Fortunately no one was hurt. We did not own it for more than 24 hours. I know what your thinking - how could this happen? I contacted Polaris warranty and apparently the warranty excludes total losses, hard to believe right? This did not sit will with me so I wrote a letter to the president of Polaris; I heard nothing back from him or his company. Evidently there was something wrong with the sled as it had no top end, either faulty workmanship on behalf of the dealer or a manufacturer's product defect. Sadly no one, meaning the dealer or the manufacturer have made any attempt to make a bad situation better.

A month later I ran into another sledder who had the same machine, year etc and after sharing my misfortune with him he informed me that his sled had caught on fire too, on the same side - exhaust side after backfiring. He was able to extinguish the fire though.

Sleds like the Tundra 300?

Hello,

I don't know much about snowmobiles, but now I've decided to get one for ice fishing.
After a bit of google research I found out that the Tundra 300 seems to be a perfect choice for me.
However, used ones are not super common here in Sweden...
Right now, on the biggest site in Sweden for used snowmobiles, there's only one for sale in the whole country...

So, basically I'm looking for sleds of any brand that has similar qualities to the tundra 300. Lightweight, good fuel economy, fan cooled, small engine and so on.
My budget is about 3500$. Over here in Sweden I think that translates to a used 2007 tundra 300.

What other models should I look out for?

Thanks!

1994 XLT 600 triple engine life?

I've got a '94 XLT with about 5300 miles on it. I've treated it very well, but it had 4200 miles when I bought it and was riden harder by the original owner. When I told him the current miles he told me I should get it rebuilt before the crank shaft gives out (?). I have more experience with cars than sleds so I was surprised to hear this. I figured if it has been treated and maintained well then just keep going till it quits! Can anyone explain this?

How does one take it off the shock w/o a compressor? Or, does one need a compressor? Shock has been removed....

Thanks,

Here the situation bought a 96 sled ran for 1mile and stopped. motor seized. They all say it was because I put seafoam in the fuel. My friend and I found a piston and rings cleaned and burnished cylinder. 125 lbs each piston. Ran great but now there is coolant mixing with the oil. what's the problem?

Anti fog.

So I've been playing around with some anti fog solutions and pads for awhile now. I've tried mossy oak wipes and another brand I don't remember. Helped very little. I've used the pj's brand and rainx liquid with a little better results. But just not quite there yet. I've been testing some z-clear brand paste at work with some mixed but promising results. But the stuff is expensive! Besides leaving them open a Crack or heated shields, has anyone found the magic cure for fogged lenses and shields? I would be using it for skiing and snowmobiling and motorcycling. Any one have some good luck with anything?

Motor seized why? Where do I go from here

Hey so I don't have a good spot to store my sled so it's under my deck and I pulled it out to fix the rear skid in it and a few other things and thought hey it's -14 why not start it see how everything's working and it won't roll over! Now when I put or away I drove it to where I park It and it was running great! Could it be water in the motor that is now froze? Help what kind of trick can I do heat the block? Put diesel in the spark plug holes? Thanks for the help kinda freakin out right now lol

Summit 1000 Electrical Troubleshooting

So I stored away my 2005 Summit 1000 SDI Highmark X about a month ago. I went to move it and the battery was dead. After charging it I realized that even with the it killed the guage cluster is still illuminated and the fuel pump sits there priming itself every once in a while.

The sled still starts and runs as normal, it does not display any "codes" or service indications.
