generic engine questions

Hi,
I am new to this site and not a snowmobiler, I am a dirt bike/ boat/backyard engineer/construction guy, however I need some general information on snowmobile engines for a air boat project I am working on. We do not get consistent enough snow here to get into sledding, otherwise I would have one.

I am thinking of buying a complete running used snowmobile so I can use the engine in my air boat project. I don't know enough about the different model numbers and basic histories to begin my search. I could tell you by the name and model if a dirt bike was 4 stroke or two stroke, trail or mx bike....but I know jack crap about snow mobiles, and the model names don't give you many hints. I am looking for complete used machines, but need a little direction to narrow my search down to four stroke air/ fan cooled machines.
1. I am looking for a four stroke, air cooled preferred, but liquid cooled would work. Two stokes wont work as well with air prop because of torque/ rpm curves.
2. 60 plus horsepower, around 100hp would great
3. electric start, but pull start would be ok if the price/ hp relationship is worth it.
4. must tolerate running in summer temps, so a upgraded cooling system might be needed, cross that bridge if its a issue.
5. relatively light weight, what does a typical 4 stoke 100hp sled motor weigh?

Purpose built ultra light engines in the 60 hp range are to expensive, small automotive engines are to heavy, Briggs and Straton type engines dot have enough power, and motorcycle engines have the transmission built into the engine, which wont work. This leaves me with snowmobiles. Flame on, I can take it.

Any way to change the forward most bogies w/o taking out the suspension? A shaft runs thru one side thru the bracket for the front shock/torque arm and thru the bogie on the other side. Both wheels are inside the rails....

Back again - Polaris RMK issue

2000 Polaris RMK 800

It's been running fine all season then last weekend it started backfiring like crazy, but it wasn't like an exhaust backfire, it was repetitive and seemed like it was coming from the carbs/reed area.

So I took off the carbs and replaced all the reeds, seemed to work then halfway through the next ride it starting backfiring hardcore out of the exhaust this time, but not consistently like the ride before. Had trouble getting it to start without pushing the throttle to the idol point when I ripped on the pull chord.

Finally got it going enough to get down the mountain but half way down it felt like it was only running on one cylinder.... Checked the plugs and all was well so I'm at a loss here. Any info would be great, just wanna get a few more rides in before the season ends. Any ideas?

Electric snowmobile conversion?

Is there a reason why nobody has ever seriously attempted an electric motor swap in a modern snowmobie? Closest I could find is a college team that dropped in a 15hp equivalent motor and thats pretty weak, and was several years ago.

Given the leaps and bounds advancements in electric motor technology over the past decade, how feasible would a swap like this be? A motor rated for 110KW is roughly equivalent to 150-160HP, and with a hig-cap Lithium Polymer battery you'd have a motor that would run for hours. Obviously there would be engineering hurdles but in the end you'd have a dependable motor that would require significantly less maintenance than a regular sled engine, and offers the same, if not better performance. A linear torque curve similar to one in a tesla or Zero motorcycle would be nutty. I'd guess that this technology will come around in sleds sooner or later, but why hasn't anybody done it yet?

Interested to hear all of your thoughts.

2004 600 Edge xp revisit?

Sorry guys to repost, cannot find my other post on this subject, problem is when I hit the throttle does not have top end , not boggy just not there, if I gradually squeeze throttle ok top end, now I have cleaned carbs, new plugs new gas, cleaned VES, so what am I missing, maybe gas filter plugged? got all summer to work on that "gem" so let me know your thoughts, I should of done a compression test, what is it suppose to be, I think anything over 120 I would be good? thanks

Time for Snowmobilers to Make Amends with Mother Nature

Quote:

For many of us here in Ontario, March is that one month of the year that we all have mixed feelings about. For many, it feels like the end of the era. The end of snowmobile season is like saying goodbye to a cherished friend, and the act of storing a snowmobile for the summer season is a somber one. The countdown clock restarts, and the summer is quickly booked with activities to keep our mind off of what we truly want to think about; next winter.

This year felt a little different, though. With the poor winter season in Ontario, disgruntled die-hard sled heads were a bit put off by the winter weather, or lack thereof. While some were able to get out riding on OFSC trails and also off-trail, others were barely able to break in their new sleds. The varying temperatures and conditions were enough to drive many of us crazy. There wasn’t enough snow to snowmobile too far or too often, and yet it was too cold to ride motorcycles. So, what is an Ontario sledder to do? The conundrum this year got real. Like really real. Us Ontarians had to reach deep inside ourselves to pull out an inner strength while Mother Nature toyed with our emotions. Every time the weather network announced a winter warning, we excitedly prepared only to be disappointed time and time again.

Of course there were periods of time that Ontario had snow to play in. The further north you traveled, the better the trails and conditions. My Northern friends made sure to post lots of pictures to remind us southern Ontarians what we were missing. Fortunately, I made it up to Huntsville area for a mid-winter trip with the folks from Backcountry Tours, and also made it out west for an epic snowmobile adventure with She Shreds Mountain Adventures in Pemberton, BC. The ultimate end of winter trip was scheduled for early-March in Wawa, as they had the best powder in the province this year. Of course, given my luck, conditions quickly declined the week before our trip, so we made the decision to reschedule for next season. Looks like I’ll have to wait another year to discover the top secret boondocking location. Something tells me this will be worth the wait!

1995 Polaris Indy 440 Sport

Hello,

I am new to this site and new to snowmobiling as well and could use some assistance if possible. Recently I purchased a 1995 Polaris Indy 440 Sport to get into the sport next season. I am not familiar with snowmobiling and have a few questions if I could get some help with it would be appreciated-

1st- the guy I got this from said that the engine was fan cooled. I am looking for a fan and do not see one. Is the fan located somewhere that a rookie may not quickly see it? Is the fan electrical? Is the fan internal?

2nd- The snowmobile will start and has top end, however when it idles back down it bogs out. It has been sitting for sometime, and each time it runs it seems to idle better, any suggestions?

3rd- As I said I have been starting it and letting it run a couple minutes. How long can I let this run before damage happens?

4th- Where the key, hand warmer and choke are located there is a push button on the panel and on the backside there are loose wires that look like they hook to it. Any help on this button would be great.

Thanks for looking and the help would be appreciated.

For all the guys back east.. this is what snow looks like...

Went out in the snowcat today to groom to the top of a Pelican Butte... we have not been there in a while, it was pretty deep! Snow was over 20 feet deep in some places. Elevation is right at 8000 feet at the top by the tower...

Here's a few pics.. spring snow is awesome! Trails down low are starting to get a bit sketchy here and there...

230 JLO on/off question

I have a 230 JLO motor that is not starting and I was wondering if it could be that there are wires that need to be connected to give the spark plug the charge, like when you turn the key to on. Is this what the problem is?

08 Dragon Oil Pump Arm Sticking

When I pull the throttle on my Dragon I can feel the oil pump lever catching on the chassis, or at least I think its the chassis. I watched a couple videos of other guys having the same problem.

This makes sense, because my Oil is draining quick!

I've taken the air box out and can feel the lever, but I'm not sure what is going on, or how to get tools back there to fix it.

Any ideas, suggestions?

Thanks!

2003 Two up Panther? 580

Quick question for americans on here, as I cannot find what this is worth, I know how much I think its worth, as this is owned by american senior that come up ice fishing every year, does not want to take it back home, most of the 1100 miles (low) are from myself since new, only thing I dont like about it, it is HEAVY compared to my 2up Polaris 600, I figure 1500 US? nothing wrong with it at all, very well maintained...

Compression Tester........

Who makes a decent one w/o spending a ton of money?? I read where you can test the accuracy of the tester by hooking it up to a regulated compressor. I was going to do that and it slipped out of my hands while grabbing it off the running board which is about 3' off the cement floor...... Now it wont zero out. A sled that "was" showing 125#s per is now showing over 150#s......

I was using a Craftsman that I've had for many years.......

How to remove drive shaft assembly

The speedometer quit working a couple years ago and after taking the speedometer adapter off I found a hack job someone did putting a new bearing on. I changed the speedo key and it lasted a while but now I have to change the drive shaft assembly. The end of the drive shaft is smashed.

Do I have to remove the bearing first? Cut it off? Then?

1997 Polaris Ultra SPX advice

Hey guys I use to own this sled and sold it to a neighbor about 5 years ago. Today the neighbor asked me if I wanted it back for free. Here is the thing. He always kept it outside. He never took care of it. The engine needs to be rebuilt, Compression is 39-0-40. The shocks are no good. It needs a new track. Who knows what else it needs. I know it has a new clutch. He had that rebuilt and then blew the motor. Is it worth sinking money into it? How much do you think it would set me back? I'm not affraid to get my hands dirty but motor issues I have no idea. What does it cost to have an engine rebuilt to get it running? Can anyone give me a BallPark figure on what I'm looking at? Thanks

Venture 600 no ignition

This 2002 sled ran for two hours before stopping. When restarting it, it backfired a few times and then nothing. Tested all the standard gizmos and then noticed there were no head lights. Also, when trying to start engine, plugs fire only once on initial start and once when key is turned off. Head lights not turning on due to cdi not energizing lighting relay so I guess problem is cdi. Ooh, big bucks. But is it bad? Yamaha has this crazy design where they sense all warmers, lighting, temps, and oil and flash a code on the water temp light. This circuitry is in the cdi. Are these tied in with cdi firing output? If cdi is bad (nothing listed as available from my search) is it possible to use some other mfg. Cdi unit?

Buying 03 rev 800

I ran across a 2003 rev 800 with 3900 miles, beaver delete kit, wisceo top end, "running great". He claims it was reliable all winter. I am trying to get it for 1000-1200.

After searching the internet for a while, I have found a lot of threads talking about how problematic the 800 is, and people saying its not a bad as people say.

I am not interested in buying a sled that is a ticking time bomb, but it seems like a good deal, and I am in the market for a new snowmobile (I have a 96 cougar 550). Ride trails, and some off trail when there is enough snow to be worth it.

The threads I have read seem to go off topic about the problems with the engine. Do theses engines last? Ive read everything from crank bearings to burning up multiple engines in a season.

you guys are the expert, and I am hoping to create a more informative thread about this engine, what can be done to make it more reliable, and if the 03 rev 800 is worthy of purchase.

thank you!

Trouble changing weights on XF 800 High Country

I can't get the set screws out on the weights of my 2012 XF 800 High Country. I have left Nut Cracker & WD40 on them for about 3 hours, tried to heat them up & not a chance on getting them to break free. I have stripped on now and have tried to use and EZ out to back it out but that didn't work so I have been trying to drill it out but is it ever hard material. I have sprayed them down overnight and will try in the morning but does anyone have any tips? What is the exact size of allan wrench I need? Going to buy some new ones as mine are all bent now.

99 polaris xlt sp missfire

Hello my snowmobile is backfiring at low rpm ? it only backfiring when im cruising around 20 mph after that it run very great. My engine is freshly rebuild bottom to top has only 200 miles on it. 125 psi of compression all over and the crank as been rebuild and indexed by a professional. I checked the coil and plug wire and its in the specs same for the mag. I checked my plug they are black/dark brown. I don,t know if its a problem but I have some carbon build up on my spark plug between ceramic and the cap ? I think the wire are too loose on the top of the spark plug and the spark jump out of the cap causing this carbon build up and missfire. What do think ?

How was your season? Pics.

It would be nice to know how your season was and any pics you could include from your season.

Here in Regina SK it was the worst winter ever. No snow, no winter. Still got out 4 times but had to drive to get there. Got out over Christmas for 2 days at Hudson Bay. Took a 3 hour one way day trip to Preaceville. And Finally a 9 hour drive to Fernie for a day of riding. Would of liked to say longer but it was a spur of the moment decision, so no planning and no time. It was really good though and well worth the drive.

2008 iq 700 oil consumption ?

so bought the iq this season, great upgrade in fuel mileage from my old xc600, about 18mpg to my horrid 9-11 mpg from the xc  but i noticed that it burns a hell of alot more oil, like alot.... with my xc i could go a season on one 5L jug of oil, (do about 1000 miles in a season) but this year i did about 900 miles and ive burnt 2 1/2 5L jugs and a 1L bottle.... is this normal ? i went on a long 400-500 miles ride with a couple newer polaris sleds 2012 rush 600 and a 2014 rush pro r 800 and they burnt maybe 1-2 liters the entire trip and i burned just over 5L..

2008 iq 700 121 to 144 conversion questions

so i have a 2008 iq 700 that i bought this season, run great but just want a longer track as now that i no longer have a mint condition sled im not too scared to scratch the paint in the powder (had a 2000 xc600 deluxe in mint condition that i sold for the iq)
my current idea since i can only buy rail extensions up to 136 and i want 144 is two things..
1- buy a skid out of an rmk from the same chasis style
so what models of rmk would fit my 2008 iq if any ? (what years would fit ?) and would i need to do any more mounting locations or would it just be bolt in ? (of course tunnel extension also)

2- buy 144 rails and put it in my existing skid, just had this idea but im not sure this is possible as i dont have much knowledge with the "newer sleds" would i be able to take the 121 rails of my current skid and put on 144 rails and just put the wheels where they need to go and todah or what would i have to do ?

so which would be a better option and what would i have to do to make this work ? also what would i have to do about clutching and gearing if i went from 121 to 144 ? i like to trail ride with a mix of powder so trail is still my main place so id like to stay as close to stock clutching and gearing as possible..

again thanks in advance for any replies, just really need some insight for this project as im planning to start ordering parts soon as the snow if finally starting to melt and its getting warm enough to work on the sled

Polaris 600 XC 2004 boggy?

Have a question, was out ripping the lake, now when I pulll the trottel top end is laggy, but when I squeeze the throttle slowly after midway it goes full tilt, what ya think? dirty carbs, new plugs, cracked carb boots, just some of my thoughts, I think our season is over but will tinker this week, any input would be great, thanks

Renegade Oil Consumption

Hey fellas, it's been a while....

A bud of mine just bought an '05 Renegade 600 HO carbed. It seems to go thru an excess amount of oil.

His kid took it out for 28 miles and it went thru 16oz. They've noticed excess oil while while running down the trail.

He hasn't checked the marks on the fuel pump yet. The previous owner said it ran a little rich. That's starting to sound like an understatement. It is my understanding when an oil pump fails it starts pumping excess oil to keep the motor from grenading. He claims a new pump cost $1k. That sounds a little much.

I noticed one of the carb boots was cracked. Compression on both cylinders is 125.

I believe the previous owner ran a cheap oil.....

Any advice would be appreciated.....

Phaze......

900 rmk reverse issue

Hey, I'm new to the site and this sled, I bought it and it has a few issues but first things first. The reverse only engages on occasion. Sometimes it goes in reverse and out without a problem, other times it won't engage at all, other times it will go into reverse but won't come out...any suggestions on what the issue could be??

92 yamaha venture brake caliper issu

can someone please explain to me how this auto adjust caliper is supposed to work? cause i dont get it. i get that the spring holds tension on the worm gear that rotates when u pull on the cable and in return pushes the pad into the rotor but how is it supposed to push it in as the pad wears? i got new pads for it and cant fit the caliper on now because there to thick. so either i have the wrong pads, but they look like they are correct!? or there is a part of this caliper thats froze or something im not seeing or to reset it and push the piece that pushes on the pad back more.!? i can take pics if need be...is there a reset or something?:dunno:

Vintage Part ID help

Been a long time since I have roamed around these forums, but I am stumped on what I believe is a snowmobile part.

I am cleaning out the family farm. My dad was a small engine mechanic and worked at a small engine shop in the 60s-70s. They were dealers for a number of snowmobile and motorcycle lines. Because of that, in the barn there are a ton of snowmobile and motorcycle parts. I have been able to ID a lot of stuff, and some internet searches have helped me along the way.

This one, I am stumped. There is a pair of them. They look like(and I am assuming are) handles.... possibly passenger handles for a touring sled? I am thinking 1970s as my dad never really had anything around newer than very early 80s. Maybe I am wrong though, and thats why I am here. They look to be NOS. I guess there is a possibility they are motorcycle or ATC related, but that seems unlikely as these were in a box with random snowmobile parts.

Any info is appreciated.

Could it just be a thermostat....?????

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

My girl friends sled developed an overheat issue this weekend.
She has a 2001 700RMK with 3900 miles, and drove about 25 miles with no issues.
I did noticed some green spots in the snow under the front / middle of the sled. When we stopped, we kept filling the coolant bottle.
Then, the overheat warning light went off, and it went into limp mode.
The fluid bottle was pressurized, and after it cooled down, we filled the bottle, and started on our way, until the light came on again. At that point, we towed back to the trailer, got on another sled, and enjoyed the rest of the day.

Thought maybe the water pump, belt went, thermostat, heat exchanger was leaking, hose???

When I got it back home, pulled the thermostat, and it looked like the picture below. Could it be that just the thermostat just is bad? Could it be that easy???

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated, as was wondering if the overheat caused the thermostat failed, or if it caused the the overheat?
Thanks
Bob

looking to mod my vmax to handle the powder

Hello

I am looking to modify my 1995 vmax 600 so it can handle the powder a little better. Any thoughts on skid upgrades? How large a lug can be used without rubbing on the heat exchangers?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Polaris 95 XLT SP 600 triple with PSI pipes

15yr old son has a dream to modify his sled and run PSI pipes. 95 XLT. We call it operation timebmb.
Here is his plan
-late '97 597cc fuji triple. The bottom end has the crank with the bigger PTO and MAG end bearings and a 4th PTO oiler. we have reamed out the oiles a little larger.
-97 hiport cylinders will be bored out to 0.020" over son knifed edged the intakes. left the ports alone
-SPI coated piston new rings and new pins and needle bearings
-97 Polaris trail style heads (Polris copy of the SLP heads)
-VM38 mm Mikunis starting 300 or 310 jets depending on venting
-Nose cone radiaor
-Primary clutch 44g weights, starting with 140/285 lb
-secondary clutch HSP S34 46/34 helix and 45/100lb spring
-PSI pipes
-plan to run 20/39 gears

Questions:
1) Are we are on the right path to success to run these PSI pipes ?
2) Has anyone had success running PSI pipes in 97-99 XLT (4th line PTO oiler bottom ends) ?
3) Read these pipes are hard to stay tuned will a Tempa-Flow help ?
4) Any other ideas or thoughts ?

I had a lot of good input from others as he had these setup on the original 95 XLT engine and 250 miles PTO crank bearing failed. Now project timebomb is going again.

Snowmobiling With a Disability + Video

Quote:

Ontario snowmobilers are blessed with an enormous network of snowmobile trails and an army of volunteers that make sure they are well maintained, signed and mapped. It’s a remarkably easy sport to participate in and enjoy – at least for most of us.

For people with disabilities, however, snowmobiling may seem out of reach. While snowmobiling isn’t for everybody with a disability, I was hoping to show how the sport is more accessible than many might think – especially in Ontario, which has hotels, restaurants and gas stations reachable on a snowmobile.

I asked my brother-in-law, Caleb Ray, to join me on a snowmobile ride to get his thoughts on the subject. Caleb has cerebral palsy – spastic diplegia in particular. As Caleb explains it, this means his lower body doesn’t work particularly well, but his upper body compensates; he uses crutches to get around.

Caleb has experience riding ATVs, but as he only recently moved to Canada after growing up and in Texas and South Carolina, snowmobiling is completely new to him. We headed toGravenhurst, Ontario to change all that.

We booked a beautiful two-bedroom suite at the Residence Inn Gravenhurst Muskoka Wharf, which overlooks Lake Muskoka. The suite was equipped with a full kitchen, fireplace and two bathrooms, but most importantly the property has direct access to the C101D connector trail. Throw in trailside gas and restaurants and Caleb would be able to ride his sled anywhere he needed to go.

Yamaha Canada was nice enough to loan us enough sleds for me, Caleb and our videographer, Chris – a pair of SR Vipers and an RS Vector LE. We were able to park the trio of Yamahas right in front of the Residence Inn.

After settling into the Residence Inn and taking care of the snowmobiles, the three of us drove up to Bracebridge to see a movie at the Norwood Theatre and grabbed some dinner back in Gravenhurst at Boston Pizza (also accessible on a snowmobile) before calling it a night.

To give us some fuel for our ride the next morning, we took advantage of the breakfast buffet that was included with our stay at the Residence Inn. Not having to go out for breakfast gave us more time for riding.

New sled what to get?

Hey guys, my first post here. I have a bit of a conniption here, I can't for the life of me decide which sled to get. So far I have it narrowed down to the Ski doo Tundra Xtreme, Summit Sp 600 154 or a Polaris pro rmk 600. I live in central Ontario so only about 1.5-5 feet of snow, this winter has sucked. I normally ride through tight trees with a few steep hills, (a summit would still fit fine). A lot of our riding is stop/go and technical. I do enjoy carving up a field here and there. I do explore quite a few rough untracked areas. I have quite a few questions. First would it take much to make a summit or pro rmk crawl along like a tundra? Is the 16 inch track on the Doos helpful, does it float better, or is it about the same because the sled is heavier? Also do the pogos and flat belly pan on the tundra really help it in deep snow,(less drag), is it even noticeable? I know the a arm front will turn better and handle the bumps better but if I can't stop my track from spinning and leaving a trench/almost get stuck, what's the point? Is the ride quality that bad with the pogos? Granted anything newer would be a huge step up from my '86 tundra lt. Is the XM chassis easier to carve and sidehill or should I go for the lighter sled? Is the poo's 600 comparable to the ETEC? I also like the wider ski stance of the pro and summit, but my current tundra is only 28.5 inches wide without my 8inch ski skins, (you get thrown around at every little bump in your path). Would the newer tundra be alot more stable? And for a bit of road running, 2km or so, how would the tracks hold up? Really what sled would have the most ability and go the most places! Also if I got a doo I would probably get the articulating suspension as it is said to help greatly in reverse, does it? Any issues with these sleds? Reliability? Durability? Whatever snowmobile I get I will put the widest possible ski skins on. Ice scratchers would also be a must. I know it's a little lengthy but quite frankly nothing else is giving me a good comparison. I would like to hear from people who have rode both. Feel free to suggest other sleds, but an 800 is a lot of sled for me as I'm only 5'4 140. Also it must be light, under 500 pounds. I know they will all be a pig to get unstuck but, can't be as bad as my 98 skandic swt I used to have! I got it stuck good in a slushy ditch by myself, had to lift it about 2 feet straight up (not fun). Thanks in advance guys, looking forward to what you have to say! Agility is key for me. Yes I know the sleds are for different purposes, so please don't tell me that it isn't a fair comparison.

New sled what to get?

Polaris iqrr deep snow, ditch banging performance, how well will it do?

I just bought a 2008 iqrr 600, what is the hp on this sled? I would like to improve deep snow performance, my snow is only about 5ft deep. I'm planning on ditching the stock 80lb skid, what should I change it out for? What is the biggest lug track I can put on? I'm not opposed to a tunnel or rail extension but I don't want to add much extra weight or spend over 3k. Thanks in advance, Robb.

97 Polaris XLT special 600 rpm problem

I have rebuilt the top end. It has lots of power when you get it going over 5-6 thousand rpms. below 2 thousand rpms it idles fine as soon as you ease it over 3000 rpms it just dies. then you have to pull and pull... for about 10 pulls then it starts. sometimes it takes choke or push in the throttle to get it started then if you give it full throttle it hesitates a little bit and then full power for over 6000 rpms but you have to keep it over 6000 rpms or else it stalls. I need help becouse id like to enjoy winter while its here.:dunno::dunno::dunno:
