Strange Pull Start issue,,,,,, then it was gone...

OK,

Crazy day out on the trails. My buddy lost his motor on a 2001 800, where it looks like the motor seized, not sure if it lost the oil line right behind the clutch or what. It was the only thing I could find wrong, except for no coolant left in the tank, and the motor would not turn....
That is a for another thread, but I towed his sled back about 18 miles behind my 2008 600HO RMK, after I removed his belt.

Made it back to the snow park and my sled was warm, but it ran fine.
We turn off the sleds, and got the trailer backed up, I pulled on the 600 pull rope, and it was just free and did not turn the motor. Pulled again and it had no resistance, so we just pushed it on the trailer.

Here is the weird part, we drove back and unloaded my buddy's dead sled into my drive way, and I just thought I would give another yank on the 600, and it was fine??? We tried a few more times and it was fine....

Could the sled get hot enough to effect the pull start??? That just seems very strange to me. Any ideas???

Besides for having a dead sled in the driveway, it was a fun day all in all.......

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob

97 Skandic - What to expect for mileage

I bought a 97 Skandic 500 fan, WT, one carb, with 2-up late last year, took it for only a couple rides last year, so I don't really know how things were going last year.

This year, I started taking it on my short trapline a bit and I ran out of fuel twice. Both times, I had checked fuel prior to leaving and thought I would have lots, so was shocked to have run out of fuel.

After that, I filled the tank full, and used it for 2 days, which would amount to about 14-16 miles or so (forgot to reset the odometer). I don't know how accurate the fuel gauge is, but after this it was just under a quarter tank. By my estimation compared to how much fuel I added to fill it right up, this would be about 8 gallons of fuel (imp. gallon) so, like 2 mpg, or worse.

The sled was carrying 2 people (310 lbs combined) and pulling a sleigh that was maybe carrying 15 lbs worth of cargo. Most of these days were spent on a trail that had been blazed by another sled, so a packed trail, but about 1-1.5 miles of it was busting through deep soft snow (1-1.5 feet deep)

I understand these Skandics don't get the greatest mileage, but is it really supposed to be this bad, considering the conditions?

At the end of the first day, the sled bogged down bad on a packed hard trail, had no power and I limped home part way till I gave up and walked home. When I went out to tow it home, I started it and it ran well so I drove it home, but was starting to act up again within a quarter mile. At home, I found one plug nice and brown (normal) and the other black and all gunked up. I changed the plugs and didn't have this problem on the second day.

Also, I noticed that the rubber hose connected to the air intake on the carb had a 2 inch long crack in the rubber, allowing it to suck air.

I am wondering if any of you guys can give me some direction as to what might be the problem here? Would the cracked air hose kill the mileage like that?

With that kind of mileage, it sures kills my profit on the trapline

Piston questions let's go

So I have a 95 xlt 600 triple. It ran before i took it apart to do preventative matinence (cranck seals etc.) Has allot of piston slop i think but im not sure hot tight they should be. I could rock them arround allot in the cylinder.

Question one - I will be replacing the stock pistons because original polaris pistons break allot from experience, thinking of going with wiseco pistons because I have had good luck with them in my Honda CR what's snowmobilers input on them.

Question 2 - is it nessasary to replace the wrist pin bearing with piston? Sled has around 3000 miles they look fine no discoloration or anything but I don't want it breaking down but I don't want to throw money away.

I'm a very aggressive rider I've blown up 2 sleds in the last two years (air cooled and too small for me) i want this one to last I'm a mechanic I know everything about what causes a two stroke to blow but the biggest reason is I'm too hard on them. My indy 488 broke a pistion skirt and my rotax 380 melted a piston from overheating and possibly frozen carb.

tach install on a ski doo

Hello again. looking to install a tach on my 97 Ski Doo Touring E LT. trying to match the tach to the speedo, the speedo is smaller about 3 1/4" diameter and is black background with green numbers. I can`t find a matching one for my year, but going back to 93 it is a perfect match (it even looks like the plugs match). so will an early 90`s tach work on a late 90`s 380 sled? meaning will it read the proper RPM`s? I`de like to have a tach to make sure the engine is running where it needs to be and that the clutches are operating properly! not to mention balancing out the dash due to having no tach right now.

Thanks!

Rebuilding clutches.

I dug into my sleds again this weekend.(Looked them over anyway) Primary clutches in particular. I do believe they need some attention. Noticed a roller or two seem to be shot. They spin but they are all wobbly. And they also seem to be quite dirty. I would assume After reading numerous posts and watching as many videos as I could, it seems like it is pretty straight forward on replacing components. I am mechanically inclined but never worked on snowmobiles. Is there anything that I can really mess up if I go for it and try and do them myself? The sleds drive fine to me, but I have nothing to compare to. What can happen if I ride them with worn parts? What all should I replace? Will a kit give me everything I need to get them back to the way they should be? They are both 97 vmax xtc 600's, which are not really all that valuable anymore so how much I looking at to do these or have them done? Thanks

93 mxz470 idle and acceleration issue

so i bought sled and got it running and it was running fairly well but then the first time i had a chance to ride it it ran well about a half hour before it started having an idle issue where i would have to baby it with choke just to keep it running and its nearly impossible to get the engine over 3000 rpms so if anyone is familiar or had this same issue and has a solution let me know thanks!

93 mxz470 idle and acceleration issue

Hello!

Hi all. I am new to this forum and would like to introduce myself. I am from eastern iowa and work in the agricultural real estate business and farm on the side. I have a 09 Rmk 600 144, 03 SnoPro 440 liquid, and 94 Indy 500 deluxe . I made it out to togwotee for the first time this winter and had a blast. There is a new Rmk in the sights.

I try to work on a lot of my sled myself so I will be posting plenty of questions. I look forward to chatting with you all!

Hello!

03 440 Liquid SnoPro floods at idle

Alright, I need help. I bought a SnoPro 440 trail converted last winter and have pulled my hair out trying to resolve this issue. It floods at idle. WOT runs great. So far I have replaced both needle and seats, adjusted the floats, cleaned and recleaned the carbs (paying special attention to pilot needle). What else should I do? The pilot is a 20 but I wouldn't think that would be the problem as it floods at idle not low rpms. Thoughts? Compression checks out as well :dunno:

Polaris Sprint part

Does anyone know where I might find a new or used Polaris part # 5710025 hood air channel? It is a molded plastic piece that attaches to the inside of the hood below and behind the windshield area and directs cold air from a slotted vent behind the windshield down to the carburetor airbox. I need one for an '87 Sprint, but I believe it was used from 85 to 90 on Sprints, Stars, SS and other similar models. Any tips on obsolete parts warehouses or salvage yards would be appreciated. Thank you!

Mountain Rookies

Looking to go to Revelstoke for our first mountain trip. We have a variety of sleds that are not set up for the mountains:
2015 Ski-doo 600 Renegade (carb)
2010 Arctic Cat Crossfire 600 EFI
2008 Ski-doo MXZ 800 (carb)
2007 Polaris RMK 600 HO 155 (carb)

What does it take to set these up for the mountains? Surprisingly, I couldn't ever find a youtube video on this.

1990 Indy Trail - Do I Need To Clean Carbs?

I had some other issues with this indy trail including having to replace the recoil rope and the fuel line inside the tank.

I was able to get it started tonight but it would not stay running and it seemed to bog down. Also, gas was pouring out of the overflow tube from the left carb while it was running.

So, is it a matter of needing to clean the carb? It has sat for a couple years but I did just remove all the old gas and put in fresh gas while working on the fuel line inside the tank.

I did have the air filter box off during all of this as I had it off to work on the fuel line and was not sure if I would end up needing to pull the carbs.

indy sport spark problems

I have a 1988 Polaris Indy sport 340 and it only has spark at full throttle. What I mean by this is when I check for spark its doesn't have any unless you hold the throttle all the way in, Now I can't even get it to run even when holding throttle wide open. I don't understand how it only has spark at WOT. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

'99 ZR 500 EFI Running Issue

Hey guys, need your help again.

Picked up a '99 zr500 efi with a toasted cylinder that sat the last 3 years. I dropped in a new cylinder, pistons and cap. Got her all back together with a new flywheel and stator.

Ok to get to the issue. It starts hard, I have to spray the cylinders with ether to get it going. Once its running, it idles perfect. But can't get the rpm high enough to engage the clutch cuz it cuts out. Now I had this issue with my 600 and the stator tested bad. I tested this stator and it meets Blaine's specs. So it has to be a fuel issue.

Anything I can try to get it running better?

Thanks,

Jess

Setting up new belt ?

OK. so since the Ski Doo needed a new belt I figured I would just get one for the Arctic Cat also. still waiting on the Doo belt.

I ordered a Gates G-Force 40G4683 belt for the Cat. the chart shows it`s the proper one for my sled, 98 ZL 500. I put it in and it is sitting about 3/16 above the secondary (sounds and looks correct).

I have 1.5" of deflection on the belt with a ruler and straightedge. I checked the engagement and it is just a hair under 5k rpm (book says 4800 so sounds correct). I`ve been reading they want 1"- 1.25" of deflection. it seems though if I had less the belt would be turning on the bottom of the clutch shaft!

I think I`m set up OK, just looking for a thumbs up!

98 Indy Trail Touring

Hey everyone, just bought my first sled. 98 Polaris Indy Trail Tour, has 1200 miles on it, and has sat since 09. Runs but needs some TLC inside and out. A mouse made his home under the hood. Thankfully didn't chew any wires or lines but made a mess with pine cones and some foam/insulation. Whats the best way to clean sled up? Can I take it to a self serve car wash? Is that bad for a snowmobile? Seat has some mildew, I am going to clean that with dish soap and brush and then WD-40 it, sound right? anything else I should pay attention to? I am going to have a guy with Polaris knowledge do a once over on it later today. Thanks in advance. Will post some pics later.

96 xlt touring clutch problem

Hello there. I'm trying to diagnose the bogging issue with my 96 xlt600 touring machine. The engine is running great. Pulls about 7500 rpm and 75 mph on the road. But when I'm climbing a steep grade like on a powerline and need to let off the throttle over some obstacle, it bogs. When I try to throttle up, it and will not get back in the powerband. It basically stops. If I take another run at it and keep it pinned over the obstacle, I'll make it (if I stay on!).

Is this a problem with the primary or secondary clutch? I looked through the links and can't quite find an explanation that fits. Thanks

Collin

El Nino Got You Down? Visit the Northern Corridor in Ontario

Quote:

Let’s face it; predictions of another year of polar vortex have fallen flat on their face. The Quebec snowmobile association isn’t showing much open, and the parts that are open have limited availability. Rain and warm temps are keeping much of the southern part of Ontario closed, with a few dribs and drabs open north of the Soo and Algonquin Park. And the word from the Michigan trails is that even with the snow they got, warm temps are messing everything up again.

So what’s a diehard sledder to do? Complain about it on snowmobile forums? Trade the Ski-Doo for a motorcycle? Take up jogging?

Absolutely not. There’s one place that regularly gets tons of snow, deep cold and miles and miles of perfectly groomed and wide trails, along with some decent backcountry options.

It’s called the Northern Corridor and it’s renowned within Ontario, Canada as the first and last place to have trails open in a province known for sledding. Last year its trails were open on December 16th (a few short days after the Sault Trailblazers got theirs open) and they didn’t close until late April – maybe even May. It’s that cold up there.

Just a few short days ago the Northern Corridor opened its first tour loop, the Gateway to the North and as of the writing of this article, 75% of the system is open. If you wanted to ride for five days straight, you could easily do it. Take that El Nino!

For all those sledders out there getting cabin fever, this is exactly what the doctor ordered. If you’re heading up from southern Ontario, you probably have your favorite place to stay inCochrane or Smooth Rock Falls. Cochrane is a pure sledding town – so if you need parts you can generally get sorted out here. As with all of Northern Ontario, there is plenty of parking all over the place for big trucks hauling trailers full of sleds.

Plenty of riders link up with Bill Froud at Extreme Tours Cochrane to take them to do some backcountry riding in the legendary Abitibi Canyon or the powerlines north of Smooth Rock. You can also go for the hardcore adventure and ride all the way to the Arctic ocean. Bill runs the only gas station on the Abitibi Loop, so you’ll definitely run into him if you’re sledding this side of the Corridor.

Further west you’ll find the Francophone communities of Kapuskasing and Hearst (for you English kids, don’t worry – everyone speaks English too.) These lumber towns have some decent sized loops as well (165 and 145 kilometers respectively) – you could literally do a new loop every day in the Corridor. Or, for the incredibly adventurous, you could do the mammothNorthern Adventure Loop – at 1645km (or 1000 miles!) of uninterrupted trail riding, with a little extra gas, you could snowmobile for five days straight.

Formula z 700 clutch not fully shifting out

Hello there, I got a 00 formula z 700, the clutches don't seem to be fully shifting out there for loss in top speed, this has happened after a clutch kit was installed, I marked primary clutch with marker and it seems belt is rising to about 3/4-1" down from the top of primary, it's hitting the correct rpms at 7800, from start to finish without jumping or anything... So that seems to be good just wondering why not getting full shift out and major top speed loss of a good 25-30km/hr on radar.

Thanks guy any help is great help. Ps these test were done on 1400 foot ice track with radar gun.

polaris airbox, what is even filtering the air?

I know the airbox topic comes up alot but i just took mine apart tonight to clean it and check the filter and im very confused on how this thing works.

there is foam inside there but it is cutout around the inlet so it doesnt filter air at all. im guessing it is just in there as a silencer? looks like the only thing that even remotley filters the air is the "pre-filter" on the hood.

whats going on here?

Damaged cylinder

I have 2003 Mountain ZR900, I recently removed the heads from my sled and a piece of broken ring got its way to the combustion chamber damaging the piston and the cylinder wall.

Does anyone know why this might have happened?

I don't want to replace the parts without knowing the actual cause of it.

There's also some up&down play on the connecting rod and crankshaft, could this be the cause?

Cheers!!!

I have a 98 Yamaha venture that I would like to put studs down the middle. The track that is on it now has holes all over where studs used to be. My question is if I do not put studs in the holes that are already there now will they rip or anything? Also eBay has studs pretty cheap
will these work?

Stolen...or should I say borrowed?

My son walked out this afternoon to bring his Arctic Cat Z 370 into the garage and it wasn't there. He calls me to ask if I did anything with it, nope.

Check the camera footage and sure enough, someone got on it and took off with it around 9:30 last night. Yeah, we were still awake even.
My son found it today, parked at the neighbor's across the street, kind of off in his little field. Nothing wrong except the toggle switch that I put on it to replace the key was busted off. Probably couldn't figure out how to operate it. LOL

There are 8-9 machines in my yard and this one is by far the ugliest, worst shape, leaking head gasket, the only thing it really has going for it is that it is really easy to start and it has a ridiculous 8" riser.

We pulled it into the garage and fixed the leaking head gasket and I decided to put a hidden switch on it as well as replace the broken switch.

Snowmobile Has Spark Sometimes

Hey all,
I'v got a 1994 Arctic Cat Cougar 440 and it runs great, when it starts, Most of the time it starts within a couple pulls but sometimes there is no spark. It shouldn't be freezing somewhere because It was 38 degrees today. Not sure where to start. Sometimes I keep the sled outside. Thanks in advance.

96 Ski Doo Formula, air cooled, engine tear down

How do you remove the cooling system shroud from Ski Doo 503 series air cooled. I'm new to snowmobiles, but I am a good shade tree mechanic. I have a 96 Ski Doo Formula SL with a 500 air cooled engine, seized. I have purchased a repair guide and wasted hours looking at posts all over the internet for assistance on how to get the cooling shroud off the top of the heads to even get started. My thin wall sockets are not even thin enough to fit over the bolts on the top holding it on the heads. Any help will be appreciated.

Cracked 1999 thundercat intake flanges

Guys again I have another problem. Putting my sled back together today I found my intake flanges are cracked. Two of them are at least. I need to get two of them that are the basic molded rubber ones without the oil inlet nipple that comes outta top like on the parts diagrams. Idk what that is or how to use it so I just want the basic ones. Where can I find these???? And also I will be cutting them to fit my vforce 3 reeds so they have to have the curable rubber triangle pieces that stick toward the motor. Someone please help

Sled started the day before now wont start (98 RMK 500)

SLED: 1998 RMK 500 (NO MODS)

Quick report of what i did (This was before the first time i started it)
Replaced fuel line in tank
Replaced fueling from tank outage to fuel filter

After doing so we fired the sled up took around 10 pulls (No starting fluid or anything) This sled hasn't started for 1year before this mind you... (Started like a CHAMP!!!!)

Noticed brake light/taillights weren't working
(The next day)
Rewired taillights/ brake light

Went to start the seld 20+ pulls. won't start now!

Unplugged the lights (Seeing if that was the issue still no go)

Went to the store 2 days later, bought starting fluid
Tried to start it today 30+ pulls choke on/off 1/4 gas wont start

What ive checked

Perfect Spark
Perfect Compression
No visible leaks ANYWHERE
Checked line inside of tank still good
Fuel is going from tank to the fuel filter to the fuel pump
After the fuel pump theres still gas going to the carbs (IDK how much their should be but its their)

Past history: One of my riding buddies put to much oil/gas mix into the sled around (Last year before the last ride) ago and was fouling it out, so i ran the gas out than put the RIGHT MIX

The last ride (Last year) the sled died with 1/2 a tank of gas, thought to much oil maybe, but we found out 4 days ago the gas line broke off inside the tank..

Thats all i got i can't thinking of anything and the Carbs are a pain to take off in this year so ANY fixes before pulling the carbs would be super helpful...

Have questions or anything ask ill reply back with the answer!

Oil mix suggestion

Went out for a run in my 1990 Enticer 400T. Got back filled up with gas and checked the oil that is supposed to automatically blend with the gas. Well not a drop of oil was used up in about 18 liters worth of driving.

1. Anyone know what the mix rate should be on a Yamaha Enticer 400T?

2. The machine was still running when I got home.... did I do some damage that should be taken care of before going out again?

Engine code 4 on 09 RMK Shift 600

I just rebuilt my 09 600 RMK QI shift. It was running great until Saturday. I was running it in some nice powder when it lost power and the engine light started blinking. It threw a 4 blink engine code. I believe that this code indicates a voltage +/- to the barometric pressure sensor. I also understand that is in the ECU and some say its not serviceable? Im trying to avoid replacing the ECU. What steps should I take to diagnose this and make a repair? Please advise.

93 storm 750 carb ?'s

I picked up a 93 storm 750.

I took carbs apart and cleaned them, they were nasty and full of crystals. I put then back together and it ran good except for when u take off right when the clutch starts to engage there is about a 500 rpm spot where it just didn't seem to have power, but didn't fall on its face.

So I went to look at the jet needle, and found that the clip was on the very top, which I know was wrong, so I put it back on the center clip.

The lack of power is gone, all seemed fine, but after about 30 min of riding the plugs would foul out.

I take the jet needles out and all of them is slightly bent, not sure if that would cause it to foul the plugs out fast.

I do not know what main jets r in there because I cannot read the #'s off of them.

What I want to do is just go back to stock carb settings.

The sticker on the hood says pto 320, center cyclinder 320, and 340.

It says the jet needle is 6cey6, and that is the same as I can read off the needles.

And stock pilot jets are 35.

I can find the main jets and pilot jets but am having a hard time finding the needles, does anyone know where I can get the needles from?

As would the bent needles cause this problem or is it more likely it was jetted for up north and needs to be back to stock.

Thanks in advance

Leaned Out Cylinder

I own a 2001 800 XC SP. I ran it last year with no problems. However, I recently returned from a trip to the U.P. and burnt up the PTO side cylinder. It looks like it leaned out and cooked itself.

While getting the engine ready to do a decay test, I pulled the carbs off. I noticed a nipple on the top of the carb that was not hooked up to anything on the same carb for the cylinder that cooked itself.

On the other carb there is a hose hooked up to this nipple and the hose runs to the air box where it seems to be connected to a plastic nipple that just blocks off the end of the hose.

Does anyone know what this nipple and hose are for? If I do not have the hose hooked up to the nipple, and then blocked off on the other end, could this cause the fuel mixture to lean out? I did not have any problems until I ran the sled hard this past week. Any help is appreciated.

Polaris 500 is a Dog

Hello everyone, over the summer I acquired a 1995 Polaris RXL 650, but the motor was shot(pto crank bearings were bad), so I decided to swap in my 500 engine out of my old Sled which ran great last year and out ran my dad's 600 yamaha. I had to fabricate a mount for the engine but the clutch center to center is correct at 12 inches. The other day when I took it out, it feels okay when taking off but anything past the low end, its a complete dog. The sled tops out at about 40mph and has ZERO power. I checked the carbs for plugged jets and they're fine also tried swapping the secondary clutch from my old Sled to see if that was the problem but it didn't change anything. Only thing that is different on the Sled is that I'm using the exhaust from the 650. I don't know if that might play a role but I did take the can off and just run it with no can for a few minutes but it made no difference. I am going to try to adjust the belt deflection tomorrow to see if that helps. When the sled is jacked up off the ground, although it bogs and is hesitant, it eventually revs out to its normal 5500 RPMs(the tack is off) and sounds normal. I'm just not sure what's going on with it. Also compression is 120psi which is what its been for the past 3 years. Sorry for the long post. Any help and/or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Polaris 500 is a Dog

just rebuilt engine, runs on one cylinder.

Hi I am new to the forum and would appreciate some thinkers helping me with my issue today. thanks in advance.

I have a 1999 polaris RMK 700 (185PTO and 190MAG and 42 idle jets not sure where needle clip is), always ran good until i borrowed it out to a buddy a couple weeks ago and the motor blew.(scored walls and smeared pistons)

I put two brand new polaris jugs and a set of SPI pistons with all new gaskets.(ring end gaps .014", piston to wall .0055")

fired right up today but runs like its on one cylinder, has very little power. i checked temps on the exhaust manifold at idle. the MAG side is around 135F and the PTO side is around 170F and they stay consistant.

When i pull the Mag side plug wire off it dies instantly, when i pull the PTO side wire off it keeps running. Indicating the Mag side cylinder is running ok but the PTO side is not.

Both plugs come out wet and the MAG side plug is also oily but the PTO side plug is not oily. I tried three new sets, same result each time.

I checked spark with the plugs sitting on the head and both are evenly blue nice sparks. I have not checked compression yet because i borrowed my gauge out and will get it back tomorrow.

Any advice would be appreciated
thanks

two track snowmobile

I saw a two track snowmobile with tracks about eight feet long, and about two feet high, about four feet apart, looked like it had a cabin in the middle similar to the size of a small cessna plane.... maybe a two seater.... trying to find out what it was..... looks like it only weighed maybe 1500 pounds, not some big heavy commercial tracked snow vehicle like the ski resorts use..... cabin was white.... no markings that I saw but we had a 40 mph quick peak that's all.....
does anybody know what this could have been????

Speedometer not working

I have a 2002 600 XC. When I bought it the speedo wasn't working and the guy gave me a spare cable to replace it. Today I disconnected the old cable and noticed the key was a little bent on the engine end but it still turned at the speedo end when I twisted it. I replaced it with the new cable and hooked up an electric drill to the engine end of the new cable with it hooked up to the speedo and the speedometer registered around 15mph. When I hooked back up the engine end the speedometer didn't work. So, obviously something is wrong with the mechanism and not the cable or speedometer. I see people talk on the forum about drive shaft bearings, I think it is. Could that be my problem?

2013 600 Switchback Adventure

Just purchased a 2013 600 Switchback Adventure. Was riding in Northern WI this past weekend and every time I opened up on a long, flat, straight stretch the sled would hesitate (almost felt like it engine was skipping). Sometimes it would happen around 50-55 mph, other times 65-70 mph. Didn't have any issues with it idling or running at low speeds. I replaced the plugs and a bottle of isopropyl alcohol - didn't help. Any other ideas what the issue may be? Checking here for ideas before I take it back to the dealer on warranty.

Also - sled darts a LOT. I'm going to replace the carbides - just curious if others experience this same issue.

Fuel line in tank disintegrated

Dang! I just put 5 gallons of gas in my 94 SKS to take it out for the first time, and the fuel line in the tank had come off. I could see it, so I tried to grab it with my pincher tool, and the fuel line just crumbles. I got new fuel line and filter/weight, but have questions:

1. What's the best way to clean out the tank?
2. What should I do with the gas? I'm afraid that there will be dissolved particles in it that can cause problems.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

sliding all over

was up north this weekend and was watching my wife ride her sled in front of me and noticed that the ass end of her sled was all over the place when riding. I'm pretty sure the track is the issue but was wondering if there's anything else I need to look into and check to see why its doing this. its a 96 Polaris indy 440. I think it might be the original track. the track has studs up the middle. the lugs look to be about 1/2 to 3/4 in lug. there was a few times that I thought she was going wipe out into a tree. she said its slides around at any time, doesn't matter If your on the throttle or coasting. any thoughts?

2002 MXZ X 800 Issue - altitude/gas

Last weekend we picked up a 2002 MXZ X 800. I know its a racing sled made for the low elevation flat lands but we ride the mountains so our issue is this:

We need to find a way to get it to start and stay running at higher altitudes. When we're at the parking lot 7-8,000ft she will fire right up and run just fine. But once we get her up around 10-11,000 ft she dies out and will NOT restart.

Yesterday she got stuck in about 4 ft of fresh around 11,000 ft. Couldn't get her started again, checked the plugs and they were not only black (just put new ones in last week) but they were also wet, which makes me think that whatever senses altitude is not doing it's job since it's flooding the engine with gas and not pulling in extra air to compensate for the thin air at that altitude. I think it may have to do with the MPEM box, any input would be very helpful.

I have experience with Polaris and Cats, but Doo is a new animal to me. Thanks in advance!!!

Squeaking sound from new belt

I have an 04 mxz and I replaced the belt on it last week and I noticed a pretty loud squeaking sound that sounded like it was coming from the belt whenever I would idle, slow down or speed up (until I got to about 15). I've been riding this belt for about 30 or so miles now and the noise hasn't gotten any worse or better. The sled also moves forward even when I don't give it gas, unless I'm on the brake. Also I noticed that it stops when I keep the rpms up. Any ideas?

Yamaha SS440 oil line routing

Hi, all:

Just finished pulling down "new" SS440 engine to overhaul. This time, all the way down to splitting the crank case. This is the first oil injection engine I've done. I'm exposing my ignorance here, but I don't really understand how the oil is delivered to the bottom end.

My engine has a gear drive pump on the end of the crank. A line comes from the tank to the pump, then two lines go to each side of the intake manifold. When I got the engine, a fourth line coming out of the pump was cut off. I've been unable to figure where this goes, and was wondering if this is how the bottom end is oiled. If so, where does it go? At any rate, some clarification as to where the line goes would certainly help.

Thanks in advance,

-Strato-

Newby to Snowmobile forum

Hello everyone, New to the forum not new to riding I look forward to sharing my stories and knowledge with you.

I like driving my classic Polaris sleds, I have two 97 Indy XLT tourings and two Ultra SPX sleds.

My friends also drive the classics as well. We have worked on these sleds and enjoyed countless hours of riding as well. Helping out with the club as we can, opening the trails, signing the trails, grooming trails, brushing trails, building and maintaining the club houses, cleaning up the club houses, cutting wood and closing up for the season. This is what we do because we love doing it, as all volunteers do.

We loving working on our sleds and riding them as well.

Take care and ride safe.

1997 Polaris Electrical Issue ??

I have an old 97 classic touring 500. I'm having a hard time figuring out what is drawing the battery down. Gone through several batteries and obviously something is drawing juice from somewhere. When a good battery is in there seems to be some clicking coming from the coil. Sometimes the starter works and then not. So I decided to run it without the battery. Now I have a problem with the headlight cutting out. It makes driving at night REAL FUN. lol The light will work from time to time. I thought about buying a new coil but I fear that isn't it. Some friends say there could be a bad wire ground somewhere. Has anyone else experienced this? I hate to think I have to chase down every wire. Or buy new coil and not fix issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Clutch engagement rpm?

Hello! So I've got the sleds out today. Both are running good.
The only question I have is, at what rpm should the clutch engage at. The AC ZL500 is engaging at 4500. Everything else is good.

The sled accelerates great! I got it up to 98mph and I had to let off because I ran out of lake.

Bogey Wheels

I have a 95 Ski Doo i'm trying to order bogey/idler wheels, the wheels on the rear suspension that the track rides on and I've found it's very difficult to get information on older sleds like this. My question is are the wheels universal inner diameter? I can get OEM bearings easy but I've really only found one site that has wheels that say they specifically fit. The sizes are 102, 135 and 165. Can I just get any universal wheel that size for ski doo and slide in OEM bearings? It's a 95 Ski Doo Mach 1 670 to be more specific.

My friend has a 92 Indy 500. We just rebuilt motor. It ran great then started loosing rpm. Can only get 7k. Now it backfires out carbs. Timing seems to be set right. Checked for leaks around block and carb boots. Carbs are clean beyond clean. Fuel pump is working proper. Have good spark. Good gas. It will start and idle great but once you put some juice to it. It will backfire spit and shudder. Any ideas

Questioning a spark issue

Ok I have an issue with spark. Just picked up a 1980 Blizzard 5500. I have pulled the points and cleaned them well. I have spark on recoil side when pulling it with the recoil and no spark on the pto side. Now I turn the motor backwards by hand on the clutch and I have spark on the PTO side and none on the recoil side. I didnt swap anything around. I am lost.:dunno:

1973 Skidoo TNT Everest...

Hi all I'm new here. I have seemingly acquired this machine (not having ever had one myself before). It has been retrofitted with Kohler 290cc motor. I'm not exactly sure what would have been in this chassis before but...
Actually it was my stepson who got it first and between he and I we got it running (put carb kit in keihin carb and replaced one coil). We toyed with it last winter till the headlight went out and it's sat till this winter again. It seems to have good compression cold (cant remember warm), but I need some help with a few things.
First I guess might be maybe a wiring diagram for the chassis, in order to trouble shoot wiring from headlight plug back to the motor connections. Second fuel line routing and specs. When did they discontinue the use of a primer bulb between the fuel tank and the carb (would one be necessary on this setup between a diaphragm carb and the tank and or would it make easier starting especially of compression wasn't up to snuff or carb wasn't keeping prime). I'm considering putting one in.
I haven't started it yet this winter.
If I can repair the headlight problem, fabricate some sort of airbox cover (original one is missing for kohler motor) so snow and water doesn't easily foul the carb, and give it some TLC maybe in eventually replacing the carb for a better one it might be a nice little machine for me as its quick enough.
One other problem it seems to have from my stepson riding it for a bit was that the cowl apparently and obviously due to a different motor isn't ducted properly for adequate airflow to cooling fan so some adjustments will have to me made there also. In addition some fool must have opted to (probably with scavenged parts re-positioned the muffler from where it should have been along the right side to in front of the motor across the lower part of the chassis which puts it quite close to the cowl. That's not a big problem as I don't have spare parts to put it where it probably would be better placed as of yet.
Main problems now are the fuel, carb, airbox, cooling and headlight issue.
Help is greatly appreciated. I don't have a lot of dough right now to throw at this but it still could be a neat little machine on a low budget with an ol guy riding it and taking some care with it.
Ron
This kohler motor currently is a pull start motor no electric.

Hi all thought i registered here before but guess it must have been another forum. I haven't owned a sno machine before and apparently have acquired an older Skidoo TNT Everest Sled (chassis retrofitted with a different motor), and need some help with it. I'm in eastern Ontario Canada and currently we just got enough snow to barely run a machine and more might be on the way with that nor-easter heading across the eastern seaboard.

2007 GSX 600 ho sdi fouling plugs on start up

My 600 ho continues to foul plugs only on cold start. Runs great after new plugs installed for the day and fouls again the next start up.
Shop said gas was the problem but it persists even with new premium fuel. 2 Ski-Doo dealers have not been able to diagnose anything.

03 skidoo summit 800 H.O.

Ok so I just got a great deal on this sled, owner "blew up" the motor, according to him it was seized but when I got it, it turned over freely.. Will even start and run on one cylinder. Did a compression test, pto side good at about 130, mag side virtually nothing.. Wouldn't register on gauge.. So I pulled the head expecting to find a hole in the piston.. But everything looks really really good.. No visual or physical scoring of the bore, piston looks fine.. Any ideas as to what may have went wrong? Why there is no compression? And I plan on disassembling further tomorrow, just ran out of time today

Having problems with trail not idling down. Set the carbs up and when I start it will go to 3000 rpm and won't respond to any adjustments..so far have tried 3 sets of carbs swapped out the throttle cable.made sure fuel pump wasnt putting fuel in base, passed acytelene torch around the base and cyls for leaks and nothing idle screws can be wound almost out and it will finally drop in rpms but won't stay running then if I wind in idle screws 2 turns it will start but go right back to 3000 rpms

Gas Mileage Problem

We were just in the Black Hills for a few days. My sled ran great and put on a lot of miles both on and off trail. The second day out my wife's sled used a high amount of gas, and she never rides full out like I do. We did play quite a bit in the trees and meadows, but about 10:30 I had my wife check her fuel and decided we better find a gas station. We rode 15 miles out of our way to get gas and made it on fumes. Anyway mileage on her sled ended up about 6 mpg where it had always averaged over 10 before. Track is adjusted perfect, wheels are all turning freely. Any ideas?

1998 Vmax 500 Intermittent Start and Lights

1998 Vmax 500 just put a fresh top end, water pump belt, drive axle bearing, used good regulator and rectifier. After I put the top end in it ran fine for about a night, until the headlights started to shut off for a couple seconds (while riding). Didn't think much of it only did it twice. Next night took it out they went completely out all lights. Got a new regulator and rectifier put it in they started working again. Ran around fine. Then yesterday the engine randomly died no spark. Let it sit for awhile. Started back up was going down a trail would only run good half throttle anymore then that it was sputtering. And all lights were out again. Finally engine died shut off and have no spark once again. My conclusion to this is that I'm thinking it's the stator because of the headlight issue along with the engine problem. There is spark on the first revolutiong of the motor then none after that. Also when headlights would work they were very dim and would pop bright every once in awhile. It is an electric start. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ahead of time Tom.

94 zr440

I am new to snowmobiles, my zr440 has basically now power. I can take the belt off by hand and seems very loose. itll go around 15mpg and the longer its moving it keeps accelerating. but once it tries to go up hill or through a snowdrift it looses all power. Could the belt be the problem? how does one check if a belt is bad? or could it be one of the clutches?

polaris 340 bogs down when warm

I have a 2004 Polaris 340 classic that will idle and run good when cold. Once it warms up it will idle ok, but it will bog down when you give it gas (almost when the clutch engages).

We have cleaned the carbs, took the clutch off another sled and tried that. Neither changed anything.

Both cylinders have good compression and there is plenty of spark.

Any ideas?

Help with 1996 VMAX XT 600

Ok guys it's been 5 years or so since I rode sleds. Started with an 84 phaser special edition, and went to a ZL 600 EMI SS. When I was in college I had to sell the sled. I just picked up two VMAX XT 600 and love them. One of them though has an issue. When you are running a constant speed the engine seems to "pop" then when I get on it it runs smooth. I cleaned the carbs and no change. Could this be a coil problem? I also changed the plugs and went a little hotter with them. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!!

1974 440 SSX chaparral with some issues

I have a 1974 440 SSX that I cannot get running right. Both plugs are firing: however, it was only running on one cylinder. Our initial thought was a bad crank seal on that side. Took the sled apart and the crank seal was good so I changed the carburetor on that side. It ran like a champ for about two miles and did it again but this time on the other side. Changed that carburetor and it ran good for about two miles and again a cylinder went down. I have changed the stator and coil, took them off my parts sled so I am not positive they are good. With it changing cylinders and running fine cold (sometimes) I am leaning towards electrical. Could a bad CDI box be the issue?

2002 XC 800 Overheating (3400 miles)

What are the most common issues (easiest fixes) that could cause overheating? I ran the sled for about 45 miles straight with no issues. I stopped for 15 - 20 minutes and when I fired the sled back up the temp light came on, after idling for less than 5 minutes. I thought initially it came on because the sled sat for a little bit hot. I did a couple circle (slowly) in the yard to see if the light would turn off but it did not. I called it a day to let the sled cool down. The next day I fired it back up again and the temp light again came on after idling for about 5 - 10 minutes. I pulled the thermostat out completely to see if that was the problem but nothing changed. I also heard from a buddy that the temp sensor has been known to go bad, can anyone confirm this? I ordered a new sensor but have not installed it yet. Any thoughts?

96 YAMAHA VMAX600xt pilot screw!!!!!!

Thoroughly cleaned both carbs and all jets free'd up of all gunk.
My issue is the pilot screw, confused.
Spec on the belt cover says 2 turns,
except when I start backing it out fuel comes out of the small opening on the bottom.
What is considered a full turn?
As of right now pilot screws are all the way in and sled is actually idling great but just white smoke even after a 15min warmup.
Any suggestions?

92 venture - grinding when shifting

hi guys
i got a 92 yamaha venture with reverse. im not familier with this sled i recently acquired it and dont have any manuals.. it says on the lever to push down to shift (i assume u can shift it with it running to) .. well the lever is bent so it wont, ( i see the notches in the shifter, were if u push down it will pull it out of the locked in rev or forward positsions) my question is does this downward motion also release something else to shift? or is it a safty feature? cause it grinds like a bitch when shifting from rev to forward or visa versa. like shoving an non syncro tranny in gear and i cant imagine this is normal..any ideas? i chked the chain adjustment that seems to be ok, and actually just changed the case oil. am i not shifting it quick enough? is this normal or no? thanks for ur help!! happy trails.:)

1990 Indy 500 classic

Hey all. I have a 1990 Indy 500 classic I bought last summer. Ran great till last weekend. I ran it out of gas and got it towed to the next gas station. Then once I filled it up it didn't have enough power to engage the primary clutch with the belt. I got it towed home and cleaned the carbs and now it's harder to start and it bogs when I give it gas unless I fan the throttle fast. When I took the carbs out they where perfectly clean nothing in them. I'm stuck and don't know what to do next. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Questions regarding 87 XLV540

Ok so I got my XLV540 rebuild and I am having a few issues. Hopefully with what Im asking my issues will be resolved.

1) Can I remove my oil tank and oil pump and just run premix? The only oil lines are into the intake.

2) The current carb I have on there really stinks. I am having so many issues getting it tuned right. Can I convert the carb into a simple carb such as a MIKUNI?

2002 XC 600 high mileage

Today I looked at a 2002 Polaris XC 600. He's asking $1200 which seems to be a great price. It's been well maintained every year, stored indoors and looks good. I took it for a ride and it rides real good, has plenty of clean power. I looked it over generally but didn't test the compression. The only thing that is a possible concern is it has around 7,700 miles on it. If it's been properly maintained, should I worry about that amount of mileage?

95 xlt crank shaft help!!

So I'm rebuilding the motor in my built xlt. When I bought it it had tripple pipes I was riding it around on the grass a little bit (just around the yard once) and I lost almost all power but the carbs weren't super clean. I'm putting new seals and pistons in the motor so it doesn't break down on me but I want to check the crank phaze to make sure I didn't twist the crank. I know triple pipes are bad luck so I got a stock pipe with a DG can. The carbs were overflowing with gas too I remember

97 Vmax chaincase question

I just drained and pulled the chaincase apart to inspect everything inside. All looked good. I am a little confused on how much chain-case oil to put in. The service manual states to put in 8.5 oz. Simple enough. However the dipstick has a fill mark on one side for a standard trans and the other side has a mark for one with reverse. This sled has reverse. There is quite a difference in the fill mark lines. I have read numerous posts on here that state to fill till it starts coming out of the weep hole as well. I am quite new to snowmobiles and do not want to mess anything up. Which is correct? Will over-filling cause problems or not so much? I am worried putting in the 8.5 ounces will overfill past the reverse fill line.

xc700 still dropping a cylinder

Hello all. I have posted about this problem before and am dumbfounded about a solution. I have a 2000 XC700 that drops a cylinder after being run. Example, ran trails for 3 hours perfect, ate lunch, ran 3 more hours perfect, took a break, ran 2 hours, started acting up. One cylinder stops firing. It only happens at night (maybe random coincidence). It will run fine once it cools down. I thought it was something with the ducatti ignition, changed the coil, still happens. So I changed the entire ignition system over to the separate cdi and coil, also changed the flywheel and stator to go with it. Still happens. I figure it cant be carburation, because that should show up more consistantly. I would think my ignition swaps rule out ignition. Compression is 120 on both cylinders. Doesn't overheat. Plugs are not lean. No evidence of a coolant leak into the cylinder. It runs great, lots of power, until about hour 6. Local mechanic can't help because he's never there when its been run for 6+ hours.... Unless someone has some ideas, I'm ready to part this thing out.

I have a Scorpion 400 with a Cuyuna 399cc motor. I believe it is a 1971 model. Engine S/N is 117117 Im not getting any spark to cylinder #2 . points seem to be ok. No open or shorted wiring. Can get spark if I switch wire from coil 1 to coil 2 so I know the coil is ok. I could use a Wiring diagram If anyone could help it would be grately appreciated. Thanks in advance.

2004 yamaha venture 700 mech reverse shift fork

Newbie question......I've put the chaincase back on with the shift fork at the lowest position. The shift fork will not raise much. I've read afterwards, that the shift fork needs to be seated in a reverse gear groove. Are those visible grooves on the inside of the chaincase?

Thanks!

08 Polaris Dragon Top-end replacement

I'm pretty sure I damaged my pistons the other day because of overheating on my 08' Polaris Dragon 800. Moderator BC Dan told me that these sleds are infamous for top-end problems, so I decided to tear it down, and sure enough there seems to be a lot of scoring on the pistons.

To give some background about what happened. I did not warm my sled up. I took off from the parking lot and was hammering it pretty good. About a mile in my engine bogged down but the sled was still crawling. After I came to a complete stop the pull start wouldnt budge, so I assumed that the engine had seized and the piston rings or piston had melted to the cylinders.

Once I pulled the top of the engine off, the pistons moved up and down freely. I was expecting them to be melted. Is this typical? If I had let the sled cool down for a while would I have been able to restart it?

I also posted some pictures of pistons, cylinders and crankcase/rods. Would you guys mind telling me if anything other than the pistons need to be replaced. I do not feel scoring inside the cylinders that my finger nail catches on, but the pistons have significant scoring that I can. I plan on buying one of the Fix Kits available for the Dragon per BC Dan's recommendation.

Another mechanic also suggested that I bore the cylinder heads out to 860 and replace with a oversized piston head. Is this a good idea? I wouldn't mind the extra power.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
