Hi all, I'm a prodigal member, but now that I'm back in MT I should be around more.
Anyway, here's the story. I've never had any clutch issues, but I figured my RMK was due for a clutch rebuild: I've had it seven years without touching it, plus no service history when I got it. I've done the secondary myself (had a couple issues with the EPI kit, but that's another story) and as much of the primary as I could get to, but decided to take it to the dealer to handle the rollers and bushings.
I dropped it off a week ago along with a rebuild kit, and they said they'd get to it in a couple days. They never call, so finally I call them and (politely) ask them to finish it up. I picked it up yesterday and immediately noticed two issues. First, it looks like they took a 120-grit flapwheel to the clutch face - you can see that in the pictures. I know you're supposed to scuff the belt surfaces, but this looks like a total hack job! I don't think they put any deep furrows in it, but I can feel a slight irregularity to the surface beyond just the roughness from sanding. Another red flag to me is that with the spring out, it doesn't slide to the open (idle position) freely.
My main question is what, if anything, I should do with it before I run it. I'm worried the rough surface is going to eat belts; I have half a thought to start it up with the belt off and take a sanding block to it. I know that's an idea OSHA wouldn't approve of, but I'm pretty careful. I'm also wondering if the dealer really mangled the job or if I'm just being paranoid.
Any inputs are appreciated...
Dealer sanded the #!$$ out of my clutch - problem?
