2012 550 IQ LXT thoughts?

Hello, I'm new to the forum and it's been 30 years since I played with snowmobiles. I am curious what you all think of this Polaris 2012 550 IQ LXT, low miles, two rider model for the wife and myself. Usage would be trail riding in N. MI.
Value? Like new very low miles.
I always liked two strokers but my experience is with Honda dirt bikes.
My brother suggests 4 stroke Yamaha's but a little pricey for me.
Thanks!

Ultimate Electric Start Canundrum!

I have a 98' Vmax XT with electric start. A couple years back my electric start stopped working on me... but then I tried it later and it worked. Again, it would "sometimes" work, and other times not... It did seem that over time, it was less and less likely to work. The battery from my last check was working and I used a heated visor directly connected to the battery no problem. Maybe a wire got loose or something. I checked the fuses near the battery.. no problem. I don't think it could be a fuse though because if it stopped working and then worked again, it really makes me unsure of what it could be. I am NOT an electronics whiz by any means, so I don't know where to start to trace the problem.

Thanks !

-Marc

Srv 540 problems

Hello I have a 1987 Yamaha srv 540 it runs great but when I go to rev it up to take off it back fires and it does the same thing when I stop after a run on the trail. It even blew the return gas line off from the back firing it blows like a flame up the line and it flys off then I'm stranded. So I was wondering if anyone has a clue to what itbwrong with my srv.

Ski-doo Summit 700 engine

My son bought this machine 2 years ago and we didn't have much snow in the Northwest last year, so it sat as it did for the previous owner the year before. Not much running for 3 years, and only 1700 miles. First trip out he ran over a ditch and saw antifreeze running out the bottom. He shut it down and said it ran kind of louder that it was. They towed it back to the trailer and it started first pull to load it and brought it home. I saw the antifreeze leak behind the water pump, thinking the gasket I pulled the pump housing only to find BIG junks of metal. It appeared to be cylinder skirt so I pulled the cylinders and the mag side rod was broken about half way up, chunks of case and the bottom skirt of the cylinder took a hit from the rod still on the crankshaft. Looks like the upper rod piston pin bearing came apart. Just a coincidence that it broke when he hit the ditch? No other damage to the machine....So here is my dilemma. Anyone know if you can use a different engine from another chassis that is a 700 or from a year or 2 newer or older if I can find one and install it? Do I need special tools to pull the case apart and what about buying a used case and crank and putting it all together? Not a novice at engine work, just never had one of these this far apart. A&P aircraft mechanic, grew up on a farm and been inside all kinds of engines and such. Or do I scrap the sled? Just trying to help my son out as he is not real happy about his $1300 investment right now and only running it one time.....Thanks in advance for any help. Parts if you have any? I need a case, crank, and 1 cylinder

Hello all, just beginning my new hobby of snowmobiling! Figured i would start here.
I just acquired a 1998 cougar 550 which needs some work, mostly cosmetic. I am sure it has been sitting for a couple of years. It runs, but bogs down sometimes and back fires. did i say it smokes?
I checked the plugs, drained old gas, and cleaned the jets.
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

Ran perfect last year until it suddenly lost spark and quit. Checked the switches and grounds, but I am unsure on how to test the stator and coil. I have an ohm meter, but I don't know for sure how to use it. If someone could direct me to what the ohms should be and how to check them, that would be great. All input is appreciated.

1973 john deere 300 carb issues

Hi Im new here. I just bought a 1973 john deere off a buddy for cheap. However when I got it there was no carb so he gave me one for it. I just took it not thinking much of it. Well he gave me a tillotson HD 106a. off a 440 sno jet. I put the carb on it and hooked up all of the lines. I can get it to run however the throttle seems touchy and it want to flood out. If I take the fuel line out of gas it will run for 20 seconds or so. So I guess my main question is is this a suitable carb for this sled? or should I be tracking down a walbro that came on it? I dont know much about these old sleds or about diaphragm carbs. The motor is a 290. Thank you for any help

08 Polaris speedometer problems

Hi, I'm new on here. I was out on my 2008 Polaris IQ LX 750 turbo today for the 1st time this year, and it ran great. Only issue I was having with it was the speedometer was out of wack. When the sled was stopped, both my digital and analog speedometers were bouncing around like crazy, it was saying 20mph then it would jump up to 80mph, and the sled wasn't even moving, it does it both when the sled is idling and when it is not running but the idiot lights are on. I wouldn't have paid much attention to it but the sled won't go into reverse unless the speedometer says 0. So now I don't have reverse. I talked to a buddy of mine who has a 2015 assault and he told me his speedometer started acting up last year, and he kept riding it, but he ended up screwing up the barring on the drive shaft and ended up with a $800 repair cost. I'm wondering if anyone else has had anything like this happen? And what the cause was and the best way to go about getting it straightened out? Thanks, Jake

I have a 97 xlt touring with a 600 triple. The sled quit running on a trip 2 years ago. The former owner said they could get it to fire off with starting fluid and it would get going. The motor will fire off with starting fluid. I didn't think it was getting fuel. I rebuilt the fuel pump. I don't feel a lot of vacuum from the vacuum line to the pump. The motor will not fire off with starting fluid with the vacuum line removed from the pump. Does anyone know how much vacuum I should have? I am looking or a gauge to hook up. Does anyone have any other ideas of what I should be looking at. Thanks

Prowler bogging out

Hey I'm new, I have a 1992 Arctic cat prowler in pretty good condition that I just bought. 3 sled choices

I am looking to purchase a 2-up sled and I've narrowed it down to 3 choices.

Each sled is basically the same price, condition, and miles. Considering that I still know very little about snowmobiles, can you tell me which of the 3 would be the best deal for a person that is looking mostly for reliability? Looks and speed don't matter that much for me at this time.

Sled 1: 1998 Polaris Indy Trail 500 with electric start and reverse
Sled 2: 1998 Polaris Indy Touring Classic with reverse
Sled 3: 1998 Yamaha Venture 500 with electric start and reverse

Do you see one of those that might be more reliable than the others?

Thanks.

Kinda odd that they're all 1998s.

Switching to a Yamaha?

Ive been in the market for a new sled guys. I'm thinking a Yamaha is gunna be it. I'm in a predicament tho and need some advice. Right now ive got an 02 Renegade 700 which is a nice sled but I think i'll keep it for a back-up/for the girlfriend.

Anyways in one hand I found a 2014 Yamaha SR-XTX-SE with only 377 original miles for sale. The owner wants $11,500 and it has a lot of extras with it(can, hand guards, 4 wheel kit, spare belt, tunnel bag etc). But the sleds factory warranty is up and no extended warranty was bought. So after taxes on registering in total I would be roughly $13,000 into this sled.

Or in the other hand I could get a 2015 Yamaha SR-XTX-SE(same sled) brand new from the local dealer financed for just shy of $18,000. This deal includes the full extended warranty but that does not include any extras that the used sled has.

Prices/taxes are higher cause im in Canada. Which deal would you Yamaha experts go for? Is the extra money worth it for the new sled? Also that doesn't include any haggling I could do that's my estimate from sticker price.

Switching to a Yamaha?

I bought a sled with studs

I don't know if this was a mistake or not but I have a studded track.:dunno:

Can you tell me the advantages & disadvantages of this?

I bought a sled with studs

If you work on your own sled you might want this

If you work on your own sled you may want one of these

cost me about 50 in lumber . Had casters lying around . its the same height as my trailer I just back the trailer up to the garage strap this to the back of the trailer with a tie strap and drive on . no lifting no more crouching ,or sore back from working on sled. Its the perfect height to comfortably work on the sled , riding lawnmower atv etc. Store parts underneath so they don't get lost even if you have to re locate the sled before the job is finished. Its self contained and small enough to manage inside garage, 4 feet wide 7 long the extra foot of plywood Home depot cut off the two 4x8 sheets ] goes on the front and back helps to make it rigid. wheel it wherever I want . stand it against a wall when not in use. I should get around to spraying some kind of paint on it to protect the wood.

XTRA-10 SWAP Question

I am ready to do a swap on my 92 Trail from stock skid to the xtra-10. Read all the posts on here and still not clear on the correct path. Also tried getting info at JB shocks and found that the link to the extra-10 measurements doesn't work; tried to contact the web owner and haven't gotten a reply yet. So, my question is, can I copy the bolt placement on my 1997 XCR with xtra-10? It is very close to the trail and would be able to keep mounting plates in the same location. All comments appreciated. Supposed to get a foot of snow here tonight!!!

93 polaris indy 440 wont move

Hello I have a 1993 polaris indy 440, got it running about 2 weeks ago, runs good, engine would bog when i revved it up to get it moving.

now that its colder(i assume) i can rev it without it bogging when its suppose to take off.

I lifted the sled in the air and the track will move when its suppose to while running, but if its on the ground it will just rev passed 6k, im pretty sure its suppose to take off at 4500 rpm.
I half ass cleaned the clutch plates with a rag and nothing changed.

I assume my next step would be to replace the drive belt, can i do this without any tools? help is appreciated.

1996 xlt 600 problem

I have a 96 polaris xlt 600 extra lite triple and it will only Rev to 5000 rpm. I cleaned the carbs and there is good spark to all the plugs. On the pto side the compression is 120, center is 125, and magneto side is 100. I took the head off to see what the Pistons looked like and the one with 100 psi is silver on the top and the other 2 are black. When it's running I know it's not hitting on all cylinders so it's gotta be the one that's silver.. so any ideas why it wouldn't be hitting? Maybe I need a new piston and rings?

New Rider to the West

Hello Everyone!

I am somewhat new to riding, currently live in the midwest. I had a long season of trail riding in Mercer WI area last season as my first go. I rode between 100-200 miles every weekend, more during the long holiday breaks! I was thinking of taking my sled out west later this season or for next season and leaving it out there to learn to ride in the mountains. I lost my Mercer WI connection and I may be moving out west in the next few years.

Are there any suggestions for good places to ride near Denver or Colorado Springs area? I would also need a riding partner (or more!) to help teach me the ropes. If there are any suggestions for schools I should also look into, that would be great.

Oh, and I don't know if this is important, but my sled is a 2015 Yamaha Viper XTX-SE

Thanks!

Idling a 1997 Polaris XLT 600

So this is my first sled and I don't know if I have a near lemon or not.

After test riding this sled I pulled up to talk to the guy selling it and after about 10 seconds he said you shouldn't let this idle and he quickly turned it off. He said something like it needs the snow (he might have said air instead of snow) in the engine area or it will burn up.

I didn't know if I was being fed a line.

I asked him it the dash had a hot engine light and he said, "yes but you NEVER want to see that light."

What could be wrong with this sled that it shouldn't idle for more than a few seconds?

Thanks.

Capability in snow/overflow

Is there any one of you guys who has experience with the length of these tracks and this "old" type of snowmobile?
Is there a GREAT difference in performance in advantage to the longer one? (137 vs 154)

I have a Lynx Safari 400, which is the very same as Ski-Doo 380 Touring. I do not miss anything, exept a little more track for safety and convenience.

I want the longer track for better flotation in snow, as well as look.
Should I spend 1/2 of the value of the snowmobile on an boggie-extender and new track, or should I leave it be?

Please dont bother telling me about any of them RMK, Summit, Viper, Tundra, Grand Touring and shit like that. I can afford it, but I dont want it.

Cracked my hood...already

I just hauled a 1997 Polaris XLT 600 home and somehow the hood cracked. I think it must have happened when we lifted it onto my trailer.

Oh well.

I thought it would be easy to just search for "1997 Polaris XLT 600 hood" and I could order one. I might be searching with the wrong terms or it is going to be near impossible to find one.

Also, are there other models of hoods that I can search for that will work for this sled?

Thanks.

Warm up time

I generally like to let the sled warm up for 3-4 minutes after it's been sitting for a number of days. When I kept the Puma covered outside, this wasn't an issue. This year, I'll have both machines stored in a shed. I'll want to move the machines outside to let them warm up; and not smoke out the shed too badly.

Is it ok to move the machine 15-20 feet before it's fully warmed up? Or should I look to pull the nose out of the shed and then start? Both machines are fan cooled.

Good or bad decision: 1996 Polaris SKS 500 EFI

Sled seems "Frozen" when first starting out

Last season I had this problem a number of times and again now first time getting the sled out this year.

After I start the machine and try to go, it bogs like something is holding it back, like the track is frozen. Usually what I do is lift the back and drop it a couple times and then give the sled a push to help it go. Once it goes for the first time, it's fine, until it sits for an hour or more. Once I get it moving, come to a stop and then go again, there is no issue.

Is there something I can do to reduce this issue? Could this be more than just a frozen track? Clutch problem?

Sled is a 1996 Polaris XLT that I mostly just use for pulling the kid on a sled and ice fishing. It has a 1.25" ripsaw track and new hyfax last year.

1998 ZR 600 wont run

i took the sled out a couple weeks ago and it ran good at first then started bogging down intermittently. it would bog every once in a while like it ran out of gas, then come back and run fine for a minute or two. Made it back to the truck, took it home and now it won't run. its getting fuel and has intermittent spark. It has good spark on both plugs when i pull the cord hard. it will pop like its gonna start every once in a while but won't start. the battery in my volt meter are dead so thats kind of useless to test things. i bypassed the kill switches and it didn't make a difference. has anyone had an issue similar to this? i'm figuring the coil or stater went bad but figured i'd see if there is a common issue i don't know about. Its batteryless EFI.

1991 polaris rxl sks 650 power issue

Well i have a 91 rxl sks 650 that I just put a new engine in. Runs good till i get on it and after a sec or 2 it bogs down and almost dies. Let it sit there and idle for a few seconds it come out of it and starts to idle good again. Dnt know if I'm not getting enough fuel at higher rpms or if there's a issue with the EFI controller.

Carbides

Do you guys have any preferences for carbides for trail riding? I'm looking to put 4" on both sleds. I'm leaning towards a basic set from Dennis Kirk or Mfg Supply. I can't see needing a really high end setup for my low power 20 year old sleds?

2003 rmk 800 carberator leak

Hi everyone. I have a 2002 rmk 800 and when I shut it off it starts to leak fuel. I have pulled them off and cleaned but it did not fix the problem. The idle is also way off. When half choked it idles but off choke it slowly starts to idle high. Any ideas?

Cat doesn't want to run!!!! Just got enough snow!

Alright first of all. I just joined this forum so let me know what I should contribute to in return for some help figuring out why my snowmobile won't run.

My sled is a 2008 crossfire 800. It will only run if it's cold enough outside. We haven't been seeing very cold temps here in MN yet. Right now it is 30 degrees today and won't start...pull it over twice, then fires and dies and chooo out the exhaust. then pull 5 more times same thing. If its cold outside(below 24 degrees), It might start. And if it does, it runs awesome! But as soon as my coolant temp gauge reaches 90 it dies and "choos" again out the exhaust.
So heres What I was doing to it before this happened....I usually start it and warm it up every month when storing. I took it out of storage 2 weeks ago and removed my diamond drive to rebuild. Finished rebuilding the diamond drive and installed it. Then BAM, won't start WTF. I drove it onto the trailer when it was 45 degrees outside lol. The ONLY thing I touched was the ecu connectors. When I parked it while waiting for the rebuild parts for the DD, I unplugged the connectors because I'm leary of people screwing with my stuff. That's all I touched on the motor.
Ok...so I swapped out the gas with 91 non ethanol and primed the fuel rail....same thing!....Always have spark but I noticed that when I use a NOID light on my injector connectors...I'm not getting the injectors to fire all the time....don't know if that's normal when just pulling it over?
I will be diagnosing it more hopefully tomorrow.
Any help appreciated! THANKS FOR READING!!

Carborator on skidoo flooding

I have a 1989 skidoo formula mx with a 470 cc engine. My problem is that the carborater keeps flooding the cylinder (mag side). I cleaned the carb and put in a new needle seat and valve assembly and also adjusted the float (which is in spec). Even after all this the cylinder keeps flooding, any suggestions or ideas on where to go from here? Thank you!

Cons to getting Reverse?

I'm looking to get a used Polaris 500 in the spring, most likely an XC. I have a question about reverse. It seems like something I would want, just for convenience. Are there hidden cons to reverse that I'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Liquid Cooled 500

Hello,

I have plans to buy a snowmobile in the spring. A little background on my experience with riding: I owned a Polaris Indy 400, back in the mid 90's, when I was a teenager (I think the year of the sled was early to mid 80's). I had it for a couple seasons and loved it! Now, 20 years later, I've decided to get back into it. I still consider myself a beginner rider, even though I have more experience riding dirt bikes and ATV's. I'd like to get something that has a decent amount of power, but not something too heavy and that has scary power. I've been doing a lot of research and figure that I should get an Indy 500, somewhere between the years of 1997-2002. Budget is a consideration. My main objective will be trail riding, not too fast, but I would still like enough power to use when I need it.

Anyway, I've been scoping out a lot of sleds on Craigslist and I like the look of the 500 XC. But, I'm wondering whether I should be looking for a fan cooled sled, instead. If I'm not going to be bombing through powder all the time and mostly on packed trails, will a liquid overheat a lot? Is there a Polaris sled around the same vintage that is fan cooled and has comparable power? I know it wouldn't have the same amount of power unless got a bigger engine, but do I really need all of the power the XC has to offer? Especially if I'm just getting back into it after so long?

I hear such good things about the 500, and want a reliable sled that's not too expensive to fix. I also hear that fan cooled sleds are bullet proof. Can someone give me some advice, please? Thanks!

01 MXZ 700 mystery wire

Just getting ready to bolt the hood back on when I noticed a fat red wire staring out at me from under the engine. It's about the middle of the motor, looks to be coming out of the factory harness and has an eyelet on the end. It is a pretty heavy gauge, looks heavier than all the other wiring. You can't pull it around much to relocate it, it seems like it needs to be attached to something right about where it sits but I can't for the life of me see anything to attach it to. I wouldn't think it could be a ground wire being red. The only thing that lines up at all is a hole in the metal part of the pan that is worn smooth, no threads that I can see. And if it does attach there it will be difficult to even get a screw driver in there without removing the engine. Hopefully one of you out there is a wiring genius. Thanks, Herb.

Is this a good deal?

I picked this Artic cat up year 1995 and a double sled trailer with canvas in super great condition for 1200. The sled starts on the first pull and from the sounds of it runs great. The trailer is also in great condition. Hope I didn't go wrong paying 1200.

New to sledding

I have ridden a few times with some friends, but this year my wife decided we needed to do something different for Christmas and go on vacation. Looked at price and she said, nevermind, lets buy some snowmobiles. I immediately said yes and took people's advice and ended with a custom trailer and 2, 2004 polaris rmk 700 vertical edges. 2k and 3k miles, got it all for $4250.

SO, with that in mind, I am curious what things I should definitely buy for the sleds. Already purchased a spare belt for each, synthetic oil and locks for the trailer. I was looking at some ice scratchers and windshield bags and possibly gas cans.

So my questions are 1) Where do you buy your snowmobile stuff like that? and 2) Is there anything else I should be looking at besides replacement parts when things wear.

Thanks again.

Adding a starter to a 1999 800RMK?

Howdy, my girl friend has a hard time starting my 800 RMK with the pull start. How hard is it to add electric start? I looked online for kits, and see them for a 2000-2001 800RMK, but nothing listed for 1999. I thought they were basically the same, so will the kit work? Or is there another option? Is there a way to change the pull start to make it easier?

Maybe I should look for another sled, but I like the 800, and it is all original except for it's skis. I know the starter kit will make it heavier, but it is already a heavy sled………

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Any links would be helpful too…..
Enjoy
Bob

2002 Pantera 550 ski upgrade

Hello all,
New to site and also new to sledding. Purchased an 02 Pantera last year and I have a damaged ski. It has the factory camoplast blow mold skis on it. Does anyone know if skis from a newer sled, like an 07 Z1 might be able to fit on it. Open to suggestions. I am on a limited budget so I have to find an economical way to replace them. I would like to try to find a newer ski that is used that will work decent. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Ski-Doo Tundra starts right up but won't keep running

I have a 2002 (or so) Ski-Doo Tundra. It's a simple snowmobile, pull-start, very basic. It will start (repeatedly) but dies after a few seconds, even if I gun it. It had just a little gas left from last season and I added new gas to the tank before starting it multiple times today. The spark plug is new and fine. I also notice I have to give the primer two pulls pretty much every time I start it. Also most times I push the throttle a few times before pulling the cord as well, to get it to start. I'd think pulling the primer so much would flood the unit but it doesn't, so I'm wondering if that's a clue. Maybe the fuel filter or something? I don't know the workings of snowmobiles, but where the snowmobile and I are located, I cannot get it into a shop so need to figure out and resolve the problem, whatever it is, myself.

Hello All

New to sledding. Purchased a 2002 Arctic Cat Pantera 550 last year for the wife and I to start enjoying this awesome hobby and now we are hooked. I recently purchased a 1993 Wildcat 700 efi from my father and I am in the process of upgrading the rear skid. I purchased a skid from an 01 ZR800 and cant wait to get it in. Now we just need some SNOW. Please let us all have more than last year. I have been reading some of the posts by RJ Gleason and he seems to be very knowledgeable in the process of what I am trying to do. I hope to be able to chat with him and anyone else with the desire to help out a newbie. Thanks in advance. Happy Sledding!!!

1999" 700 GT cylinder not firing

Hello all, i need some help. I have a 99" 700 GT that the right cylinder quits firing shortly after starting. put in three new plugs, start it and the exhaust pipes start to warm then the right one goes cold. pull plug and its wet so it has gas there. If I put it on a stand start it and rev it for a little while it sometimes catches up and stays firing. I took the middle and the right plug wires an switched them to see if the problem would follow to the center, instead the left plug quit firing. excellent comp. on all three. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Unfroze crank...engine longevity?

My 15 year old son found a 1997 Indy 500 that Sat for two years outside for $400. He negotiated a deal with the guy (a family member) to see if he could get it running first.

He and a buddy got it to our garage and when they tried to pull the cord the engine was froze up. They asked for my help & I thought - stuck rings, so we put some lube down the cylinders. After a time that freed it up some but it was sticky & the lower end made squeaky noises.

So, we pulled the carbs & exhaust & filled the lower end with two stroke. After a time I spun the clutch by hand & it was completely free!

So then we flushed the block and did the fresh gas, oil, carb cleaning thing & put it all back together. Compression test 122 both sides & good spark.

Pulled the cord & it fired on the first pull!

So my question is this - with the crank bearings formerly froze how much of a ticking time bomb is this engine? Has anyone ever unfroze bearing & had them last a decent amount of time? My son's friend is looking at buying it & I said it could run for 10 miles or 2000 miles but I don't really know.

He put 10-15 miles on it last night. Seems to run great.

Thoughts?

Lack of power-99 rmk 700

I am new to snomobiles and have recently bought a 99 rmk 700. When purchased it seemed to have ample power and something happened and this is no longer the case. From a stop in deeper snow it will not even spin the track maybe this is normal though. It seems to be better after I get moving. Also I can only hit a top speed of 50 mph. It appears to be running fine just no power. Not really sure where to start. Thanks for any help! As a side note the second time I was riding it suddenly would not run at all but I disabled the kill switches and that solved this problem.

Sleds haven't been run in 3 years

I just bought two sleds from my brother this past weekend. They have not been run in 3-4 years. Stored in an unheated garage (-20F to 100F). These are the 2nd and 3rd I've owned.

1999 500 XC, 3978 miles.
2002 600 Classic Touring, 1185 miles.

Always have had premium gas no ethanol. Last fill had Sta-bil added.

I've siphoned the gas out via an underhood fitting.
Will buy a new battery for the 600.
No mice nests.

What else should I do?

Setting belt tension 98 AC ZL500

Ok. Now that I've got the new primary spring in the clutch I'm looking at the belt and it seems it has a lot of slop. What is the proper procedure for setting them up? I know they aren't supposed to be tight. Is there a procedure to get it set up right? The secondary is good, the belt is about a 1/16 below the outside of the clutch. It seems like it would take quite a bit of clutch movement/RPM to get it to grab.
My SkiDoo seems to have much less slack, like it will grab just off the bottom of the sheaves (I think that's what the sides of the clutches are called). Looking at the cat it looks like the belt will grab about a 1/4? Of the way up the clutch! The belt looks good and shows no signs of cracking, or excess wear.

putting runner on 1990 Yamaha problem

Putting new runners (some people call them wear bars) onto the bottom of my skis. Picked up a set for my 1990 Yamaha Enticer ET400TP. Went to put them on. Should they just slide on or is there some bending required to put these on. The front bolt on the bar is simply not long enough to reach through so that I can bolt it on. When I look at the old runner the bolts are in the same place but the shape is different. Wrong part?

I am putting the engine back in my Phazer and am hooking up the oil lines. I have run into a problem with my memory and where all the oil lines connect and run. I have most of them figured out. I am drawing a blank with one of the tubes. I had one that comes out of the back lower part of the crankcase. I can't figure out where it attaches. As I have it now, I have two tubes going to the oil tank and then two tubes going to each carburetor/reeds. I am very green on this stuff, but thought I'd try the rebuild and see if I could do it. Pretty sure this fuel pump is toast, where can I get a new one?

Before I start, I barely know anything about snowmobiles, or really anything with a motor for that matter. But this happened to my fuel pump while I was riding last winter, I'm pretty sure its not supposed to come off. So is it broken? If so where can I find a new one? Aftermarket TACH and ignition pulse question

I will start by saying hello and have gathered some good knowledge here and appreciate it. Being mechanic i didn't think i would need this site....until now...lol. So i got me a free 72 cheetah 440 with (what was said) a 100 miles on it. It is mint and shows little use, was going to get it running and flip until i seen the value. Well i have since come to like the couch with skis so decided to keep it. I ditched the walbro for a mikuni got dialed in enough to ride and since been waiting for snow. I'm A big fan of keeping things original but since decided to put my own touch on it without molesting it to much and have since run into a few issues that i hope some of you would be happy to help with.

1. MY RECENT PROBLEM. So i cant leave anything alone i decided i wanted to put a Tach on it. I download the service manual, and realized the electrical section is worthless did some searching and i CAN NOT find any info on the ignition. I did see people have tachs on these and i have a few laying around i wanted to use. So My question is this. I can deal with split coil issues but i cant figure out how many pulses this ignition is. Does anybody know? from the service manual i see what appears to be four magnets on the magneto so my general assumption was i need a 4 pulse tach. is this true? or is it a 2 or 6 pulse? Not totally necessary but since i looked into it seems like a tach may have been an option back then.

Hello all. I have a 93 XCR440 that I'd like to slow down for my kids to ride. I'm wondering if I can do this by reclutching. I'd like to make the drive clutch engage at lower RPM and keep the driven clutch from opening too soon. Are there any references for what springs to use? My kids weigh 56 and 78 lbs. Thanks

Tach wiring

I bought a speedo and tach setup from KC that fits perfectly in the 1996 Jag. Fired up the sled, raised the rear and the speedo works....sweet!

The tach isn't working and I believe it's s wiring issue. If I plug the tach in, only the "temp" light illuminates. I believe I need to connect the yellow and brown wires for the tach to work correctly. Instead of hacking up the harness, I figure I'd just make some connector wires that will plug in.

Does anyone know what type of connectors Arctic Cat uses?

A few pics of what I'm talking about:

Thanks again KC for sending these along!

Crossfire 800 diamond drive leaking

I've got a 2010 cfr 800 with 4800 miles, On my last ride last year I noticed my diamond drive spewed oil all over its cover and everything around it, since I was riding it hard that day boon docking/ tailwalking and things like that to the point it actually blew the top end I figured maybe it just pressured up and all came out through the vent in the threads or somthing( I've seen small amounts come out of here lots but never a large amounts) so this summer I rebuilt my top end an decided to just clean all the oil off of everything and refill my diamond drive to see if any leaked out while it sat for the rest of the summer rather than splitting the case witch I just did last fall to do the 6203 bearing upgrade and replace all other bearing and seals to freshen everything up, witch held up for 800 miles last year until the point on my last ride were 6oz of the 15oz leaked out, so seeing no oil from sitting all summer I stuck to my original thoughts of how it leaked out and began breaking in my new top end going back and forth in the feild today, nothin crazy, after about 20 miles I stoped to check everything out and sure enough there's a fresh coat of gear oil all over the dd and surrounding area. I'm having a hard time telling were its coming from cause it just seems to fling off my driven clutch and not stick to it. Any ideas?

Newbie moving north needs "which sled?"

I am a 65 year old plumber who has a 37 year old son who needs a permanent home (disabled-Mental) since he plays radio too loud for apartment. I have decided Cheboygan Mich. I found a house right on the trail 30k. It is 1mile down the trail (old railroad track 65 mile trail to Gaylord) to Walmart. I thought of a snowmobile since he does not drive and will need groceries in winter. I have not asked him yet but thought I would tap experts to see if this is doable. I would want a sled that would not be too much maintenance and he could not kill him self on doing 60mph. Is there a sled that would have electric start and can be governed down to say 30mph under 2 grand used? If so reliability old school seems appropiate but I have no clue since I only drove 1 once, please advise -also closest repair Bradts way down road so need advise . Mike
or should he stick to bus? Just thought he would enjoy the snowmobile.

Something attacked my gas cap

I've been meaning to post this for awhile. I had the Puma outside under a cover last season. After the last ride, it was outside for a week or so before I decided to start putting it in the shed.

Not sure what did this, but it tore into the metal pretty good!

And that other one in the pic is from the spare tank I just sold. Doesn't fit! D'oh. I'll have find another OEM one.

1985 polaris indy 400 spindle

Having trouble finding a spindle for this particular sled. The bolt in the old one was rusted and infused into the spindle. Even pulled out the torch to apply heat to beat it out with no luck. Would anyone know where to find one? Or know of any later models that this particular spindle was also used in. I guess worst case scenario i can have the old professional drilled out.

1985 Yamaha SRV 540 questions

I just got a 1985 Yamaha SRV 540 sled the other day and was looking up some maintenance stuff and was wondering if it was a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. It has a oil container and no place that says anything about mixing gas on sled, just says "Check Oil When Refilling Gas" on gas cap but I was poking around and people are saying its a 2 stroke and to mix gas. Please help. Thank you so much

Info on '90 Polaris Indy 500

Hey guys, new guy to snowmobiles here. Looking at possibly buying a 1990 Indy Classic 500 sled. It could use a new seat and some cleaning up on the cowl but the motor runs good and seems like the track is in decent shape. What do these normally go for?

What can you guys say about this vintage and model sled? Are they reliable? Are there modifications you can do to improve performance? Are they water or air cooled? Thanks for any info!

I have a 96 ZRT 600. the sled had been sitting for a few years ( long story). Gave it good going over, carb rebuilds, clean up, new plugs compression check, fresh fuel and oil. Hello from Grand Rapids, MI

Hey everyone. Been riding for 40+ years. First sled was a Scorpion Little Whip, current sled is a Polaris Classic 500. Enjoy boating and riding quads in the summer and obviously riding sleds in the winter. Just wish we could get as much snow this year as we did last year. Found this site looking for a new set of affordable track clips, which I did find. Thanks. Now if I could just get someone to borrow a track clip tool from. Hmmmmm.

Hello from Grand Rapids, MI

Primary Clutch Mystery! Please help!

So this year I bought a couple of Polaris 800s, we've taken them out a few times and the 2000 runs great, but the 2001 is being quite quirky. It doesn't have this issue all the time just when we start riding, then it stops and behaves the rest of the day.

When we start it, it will run fine then after riding it about 30 ft it dies. When we try to turn it over again the pull chord will only give about 3"-4". The extra resistance on the chord remains for about 5 pulls, then the chord releases and it starts up, but then it tries to take off on it's own, you have to hold the brake to keep it still. We restart it 2 -3 times and it will finally stop self engaging.

I know that this has to a primary clutch problem, it's like it stays engaged when it dies and just never lets go of the belt. Not sure why it finally disengages after a few tries and runs great the rest of the day. Just wondering what it may be.

From what i understand it seems like it may be one of the flyweights getting stuck in the wrong position, or the main bushing going out inside the clutch? Not too sure, but any advice would be epic! We're gonna pull the primary on Saturday and check it out.

Thanks ahead of time!!

1989 Arctic Cat JAG AFS

Hello to all,

I had just recently bought a 1989 Arctic Cat Jag AFS and I have been working on it now for about 3 months and im getting to the end of what i would like to do and one of the problems i have come across was finding a tachometer for my snowmobile. Everything else on the sled now works and looks pretty good. I have seen those digital Tachometer's that attach to the spark pugs but i would much rather have a tach that will go along with my spedo.

So really what i was wondering is if i can just take a tachometer from a similar year and plug it into a accessory plug by my spedo. I wanted to ask some people that have more knowledge in this before i just start throwing money around trying to find something that works.

Your help is very much appreciated and thank you.

RAVE valve

I replaced the pistons and one cylinder on my 2000 ski-doo 700 summit. The new cylinder had aluminum welded to the cylinder wall. I removed the aluminum with a cross hatching stone. The RAVE valve will not insert into the shaft. Did the shaft swell when the engine seized? Is there a simple fix or just get another jug?

I am replacing the small clear coolant lines which have deteriorated and seem to have an extra one. The one from the reservoir to the radiator cap is clear but there is another one near the pull start near the larger black 2" line that I'm not sure where it goes (maybe a tee to the first one?) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

What to Buy? But don't know what to get???

I'll try to keep this short, but I'm looking for input. I have owned a 93 Polaris 580 XLT and 02 Polaris Classic 700. I only was able to get a few years out of both sleds combined, however they where bought used well past there prime. I live in the Chicago West suburbs and have probably done 7 or 8 trips to norther WI and a few quick trips over the boarder in MI. I'm looking to get a new or newer sled in the next month or so. My last 2 experiences hasn't left me loving Polaris, but I have friends that swear by them. I also have a few friends that are very loyal to Artic Cat and love them as well. Those have always been the 2 most common sleds in the group. For some reason the group has avoided Ski-doo's and Yamaha. I will say, the only time we have ever encountered a brand new sled with less than 200 miles on it broken down on the edge of the trail, it was a ski-doo. Long story short, I;m looking for some one to sell me a newer make and model or here models to avoid. I will be riding this sled primarily on the trails and WI and MI, but will also ditch it around IL when the weather allows it. I also would mind having a sled that could make it in the mountains if I was to find myself out there once or twice in the next 5 years. It doesn't have to be good for the mountains, but could make it in a pitch if I so choose. I like to go fast, but I don't need to go fast all the time. I find wooded trails more enjoyable than open lakes, However it is nice to hit the gas and fly once in a while. I'm open to 2 or 4 stoke, 2012 or newer, 600cc and up, but most importantly RELIABILITY! Trying to stay under 10k at all costs, but not afraid of saving money on a great deal, I'm even looking at an 2012 Polaris 750 turbo IQ, however I hear they are very heavy, but crazy fast. Open to suggestions or Models to avoid.

Thanks to anybody that posts on this!

97 700 RMK engine issues

Hi Guys/Gals,

This is going to be a bit of a long explanation of what's going on so please be patient with me and thank you for any and all help in advance...

I bought a 97 RMK 700 in the summer for crazy cheap ($180) that was in need of mostly cosmetic repairs. Ran great and has 135psi compression on both cylinders. Has twin SLP pipes and stock gutted airbox. I've cleaned the carbs and installed new jets (same ones that were in it when I bought it 165 mains and 42 pilots - I'm at about 4000') I have the air screws turned out 1.5 turns as well. The Sled starts and runs excellent at an idle but on my digitron the mag cylinder is very cold compared to the PTO side (to the point where the PTO exhaust is hot to the touch after a few minutes of idling and the mag side exhaust is still cold). I can place my hand over and completely cover the mag side carb and it will not kill the engine but will if I cover the PTO side it will. I have swapped coil wires around with a little bit of change but nothing significant. I was thinking that maybe the mag side was getting intermittent spark and not firing all the time  Also I have sprayed starting fluid around crank seal locations as well as carb boots with no increase in idle (I know this will make the cylinder run hotter if there is a leak).

There seems to be a mist of fuel coming back out of the carbs when I give it some throttle from an idle. I have noticed that the carb slides seem to be a bit sticky and do not return all the way down if I slowly release the throttle but if I snap the throttle they will return fully.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated as to where to start or components to replace as I'm planning on going to Golden, BC in 2 weeks and want to get these issues figured out so that it runs proper here before I rejet it up there.

Thanks Everyone!!

Primary clutch question

So I'm replacing a broken primary clutch spring on a 98 Arctic Cat ZL500

My questions are do you need to lube anything? It would seem lubing anything will attract dirt! Everything is free and has no excessive play.

Also when I removed the clutch from the crankshaft there were 2 spacers, metal and plastic. In what order do they go in?

Let me know if I'm missing anything!

Thanks!

Yamaha venture low compression??

I picked up a 98 yamaha venture 600 twin in excellent condition for free!!! But the bad news is it has 11000 miles and the right side cylinder has about 60psi in it and coolant going in. I am thinking of getting a top end kit and doing that just looking for opinions on where to start. Should I start ripping In to this and just seeing if the head gasket is just bad and replace or just do both pistons and all new gaskets. I did get it running and seems OK just don't want to sink a ton of money in it. thanks

Need Help Bad with Timing 1987 Yamaha XLV

So. I got a dial gauge made for timing. Well I cant seem to understand the manual and how to do it. I am very well diverse in mechanical stuff but cant seem to understand this. Can someone explain what I need to do in simple terms please? I have attached the manual says and I also attached a picture of the gauge I have. I understand the timing marks as well just need to know how to position my dial gauge. Thank you so much!!!

Rotate magneto flywheel until piston is at top-dead-center (T.D.C.)
Set the zero on dial gauge face to line up exactly with a dial gauge needle. Tighten set screw on dial gauge stand to secure dial gauge assembly. Rotate flywheel back and forth to be sure that indicator needle does not go past zero.

5.Starting at T.D.C., rotate flywheel coun- terclockwise until dial gauge reads ap- proximately 3-1/2 needle revolutions before-top-dead-center (B.T.D.C.).

6.Slowly turn flywheel clockwise until dial gauge reads specified ignition timing.

Ignition timing (B.T.D.C.)
1.5 ±0.1 mm (0.059 ±0.004 in)

7. Check the marks on flywheel and base for alignment.

If not aligned, adjust ignition timing as follows.

GA resident ??? buying used snowmobile

Recently I posted about wanting to have a snowmobiling experience, and thank all of you who shared advice and suggestions! It seems that it would probably be about $1K to go ride a snowmobile once or twice by the time I pay for plane tickets, car rental, motel rooms, food, and snowmobile rental. For some people that wouldn't be too much money for the experience but I'm not in that kind of financial position, so maybe the whole idea in unrealistic. But thinking on to different options, it looks like I could buy a used snowmobile for about the same price or less. We usually do get snow at least once a year in this part of GA, and if it only lasted long enough to go riding for two days that would be as much as I could hope for with the original rental idea. And if it happened twice in a year I'd be ahead. And if I hauled it to other places in NC or TN or wherever when it snowed there then it could turn into way more riding than with the original idea.

Can anyone give suggestions about how to make it practical to ride a snowmobile when there isn't snow to ride on (I don't want to try that water stuff), like to put wheels under the skis? Is there a way to not destroy the track? That would give more use out of the machine making it more practical to have, and also keep it running so on the rare occasions when it does snow it would be good to go. Actually it could be very practical because with the situation I'm in I could ride it to work which is only 2 miles away and can get there without driving on the road.

So can anyone give suggestions about buying a used snowmobile for around $1000 and how to make it practical to ride when there's no snow? What machines to consider, and what to stay away from... I'm a small person and only weigh about 140 pounds, so it seems that should be something to consider though I know nothing about such specific considerations. I just saw a video of a guy riding one with wheels in front, riding up and down the road in front of his house. Isn't that bad for the track, or can they handle riding on the street?

Thank you for any help with this!
David

Decisions

So, Its almost time for snow (I hope) and ice (i hope). And, I sold my ice fishing rig last year, made a ton of money off of it, and didnt find anything all year that I liked. Now thats its almost time for the bay to freeze, I need a sled, bad. I found a couple old Cats (80 and 81) Panthers, 440 and 500cc. with a trailer for $450. Thinking hard about picking these up after Christmas (assuming they are still there). I could flip the trailer and make some money back and I like the idea that I'd have a spare sled for a buddy or my son to ride. Both have hitches (nice for pulling the shanty), but no where to mount my auger. The 440 has handwarmers that do not work, and there are a few cosmetic things that would need to be attended too. Thoughts on these? Not trail riding, only using for fishing.

2001 xcsp 600 crankcase questions

Polaris Liberty 600 crank snap ring groove ear broke off when I was installing the crankshaft today. I was not being very careful so it was my fault. The top case half still has a full groove and the bottom as you can see in the picture has over half a groove yet. What's the purpose of this one snap ring groove? Just alignment purposes during assembly before the case halves are tightened? Or does it serve as a mechanical/load bearing surface while in operation? Once the case halves are tightened the crank shouldn't go anywhere anyways in my opinion, but I'm not sure. Any professional input would be greatly appreciated!! Can I still use this case? Also it looks like an oil gallery where the piece broke off that somehow lubricates the water pump/oil pump driveshaft gear. How does this shaft receive lubrication in detail. Does oil get fed from the oil pump itself and it drains out this slot into the case or does the oil come in from the case? And if the snap ring is in this groove doesn't it block oil from traveling all together?

97 yamaha mountain max issues

I recently bought a 97 Yamaha Mountain Max 700 triple. Been having issues with the idling and it backfiring. The only time it sounds like the sled is idling the way it should is when the choke is on, but when I shut the choke off and just let it idle on its own it sounds like its only running on 2 cylinders and sounds like crap and when I go to give it throttle it would backfire. Keep in mind there is no snow yet and haven't even rode it yet, just started it and noticed it isn't running the way it should.

I have read a lot of threads on here regarding same issues so I did take the carbs off and cleaned them(not guaranteeing it was a thorough carb cleaning though). also checked plug wires on coil pack end and at the spark plug cap. Tried checking spark plug caps with ohm meter and not sure what I'm doing cause nothing reads 5k ohms so probly doing that wrong. Also unplugged Tors system and hooked wires back into themselves and no change.

Now since I cleaned carbs and put back on when I start the snowmobile whether I have to choke on or not it does not idle well at all. Just sounds like it's running on 2 cylinders all the time and have to keep flipping the choke on and off to even keep it running. Any help or ideas?

Help with Polaris 340 fan carbs. Stalling at idle...

I have a 1994 Polaris Indy Lite that I am restoring. I am having a difficult time getting it to idle. It starts normally using the choke. When I turn the choke off it idles fine for 30 seconds to a minute and then idles down and abruptly stalls. When it starts idling down, I can keep it alive by applying/feathering the throttle. If i dont mess with the throttle it dies.

I have removed and cleaned the carbs twice. They are spotless. The main jets are 140's (stock 145), pilots are 35's which are stock and the LS screw is out 1 turn. Compression is around 100 psi per hole (its fan cooled so this should be fine). The crank seal on the PTO side which is visible is clean. I have tried spraying starting fluid around crank seals and intake boots to notice a change in engine speed and nothing changed. I also removed the fuel lines from the fuel pump while it was running and the fuel pump is pumping fuel to both carbs.

Can anyone tell me why it idles ok for a little bit then abrubtly stalls? What else should I check? Im stumped. Thanks in advance.

Ski interchange on Phazer

Anyone ever change the skis out for one from a different model. Specifically cheaper ones. Hard to justify 150 for one OEM ski. 85 pz480e

1995 formula z 583 track not rotating under weight

I am fairly new to the skidooing scene and picked up a formula z 583 last year. everything went off without a hitch until this year when I started it up and the track will not rotate while sled in on the ground. when the track is lifted it rotates when primary engages. the belt seems to be sitting fairly low in the secondary (about 1 inch below flush) and the secondary is adjusted all the way closed. it is the proper belt for the sled as is brand new. can someone please help me! thanks!
